A red alert was issued by the IMD on Tuesday in Kerala’s Wayanad district, where very heavy rainfall was received in Mananthavady and Vythiri areas during the day. Photo: X/ANI At least one reported dead, seven are missing, and seven are hospitalised at Kalladi near Meppadi in Wayanad following a massive mudslide triggered by torrential monsoon rains near the entrance of the under-construction Wayanad tunnel road (Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi) project linking Kozhikode to Wayanad on Tuesday (July 7, 2026). A major rescue operation is underway. The CM has said that two Ministers, A.P. Anil Kumar and T. Siddique, are leaving for Wayanad immediately. ​The incident occurred near the Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi. Officials said rescue operations were underway. Shigellosis cases rise to three in Wayanad; Health Minister reviews situation

One more student tested positive for shigellosis, a bacterial infection caused by shigella, in Wayanad on Tuesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases to three. Following the outbreak among students of Mar Baselios AUP School at Koliyadi, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan visited those undergoing treatment at Taluk Headquarters Hospital, Sulthan Bathery. Mr. Muraleedharan visited various wards and interacted with students, including those undergoing treatment with symptoms of the disease, and their parents, to inquire about their condition. He said there was no cause for concern. The Minister also held discussions with doctors regarding the health condition of those undergoing treatment. Later, chairing a review meeting, Mr. Muraleedharan directed officials to prepare a special protocol for shigella treatment. He also instructed the authorities to conduct stringent inspections at roadside eateries and hotels found to be operating under unhygienic conditions and to ensure strict sanitation standards. The deceased has been identified as Jessie, 46, and her husband is Shaji, a resident of Puthumala. Shaji has been admitted to the VIMS Medical College Hospital, Meppadi. He works a security guard at a private hospital. Shaji was on his way to work around 6 a.m. when the couple was attacked by the wild elephant at Kalladi Choondi. The elephant was crossing the road then. Jessie was seriously injured and immediately taken to the hospital, but she could not be saved. Local residents told the media that the presence of a wild elephant was detected in the area two weeks ago. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the first phase of the rehabilitation of the landslide survivors of Chooralmala-Mundakkai, handing over homes built as part of the township to 178 families and promising to rehabilitate the others before the start of the southwest monsoon in June. A total of 402 families comprising of 1662 people will reside in the township upon completion. Over 250 people were killed on July 30, 2024, in a series of landslides in Wayanad’s Mundakkai-Chooralmala villages. New Delhi, Lieutenant Colonel Seeta Ashok Shelke of Indian Army, who ran several high-risk rescue missions under adverse weather conditions in Kerala’s Wayanad during the 2024 floods and landslides, has been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2026 in individual category. Lt Col Shelke to be honoured for work during Wayanad landslides The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority has won the award in the institutional category for significantly strengthening disaster preparedness and response by deploying 1,185 trained Aapda Mitras as disaster management officials since its inception in 2005, a government statement said on Friday. The nominations for the award were solicited from May 1, 2025 onwards. In response, 271 nominations were received from institutions and individuals. Lt Col Shelke was chosen for running large-scale Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in Wayanad.
