The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, as a cyclonic circulation persists over south Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu regions.  The weather system is expected to influence rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the next week. According to the weather department, widespread rainfall is likely across several parts of the state, with heavy showers expected in western, central and southern districts. The forecast comes amid strengthening monsoon activity over the southern peninsula and favourable atmospheric conditions for the development of thunderstorms. The districts likely to receive heavy rainfall include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Karur, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari. Vidarbha on Wednesday continues to reel under an intense heatwave, which has persisted for the past 16 days. Rainfall activity in the region has remained isolated, with only light intensity showers reported at a few locations.  Maximum temperatures have shown no significant change and continue to remain above normal, while minimum temperatures have stayed largely normal. Brahmapuri in Chandrapur district and Gadchiroli recorded the highest maximum temperature at 46.6 degrees Celsius, while Buldhana registered the lowest minimum temperature at 21.3 degrees Celsius across Vidarbha stations. Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest & southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin Area, southwest, southeast & eastcentral Bay of Bengal and remaining parts of Andaman Sea during the next 2-3 days,” IMD said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said conditions are becoming favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16.
