Relief material recoveries put several Trinamool leaders under scanner; many arrested, others face protest

Among the latest incidents, a large quantity of blankets, tarpaulins, clothes, rice, and wheat was allegedly recovered from locked Eastern Coalfields Limited quarters linked to TMC leader Udeep Singh in the Jamuria coal mine area of Pashchim Bardhaman district on Thursday (June 4 ).  On the same day, recoveries of relief materials were reportedly made from the residence of former Trinamool Minister Giasuddin Molla in Usti, South 24 Parganas district. Soon after the recoveries, locals started protesting outside the house and shouted “thief, thief”.  Former party MLA Narendranath Chakraborty from the Pandabeswar Assembly constituency in Paschim Bardhaman also came under fire after tarpaulins, clothes, and food items were allegedly found in a godown right beside his residence during a search operation by police. EC transfers Kalighat Police OC Gautam Das over controversial photo

2 min readKolkataMay 2, 2026 05:43 PM IST The Election Commission (EC) Saturday transferred the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Kalighat Police Station in Kolkata, Gautam Das, by replacing him with Chameli Mukhopadhyay, OC of Ultadanga Women Police Station in the city. This decision was taken after Das posted on a social media site a photograph of himself with an automatic rifle while wearing the Kolkata Police uniform. In the wake of Das posting the photo, the Trinamool Congress complained to the EC and urged the poll body to remove him. This is the third time the OC of Kalighat Police Station has been transferred after the poll schedule for Bengal was declared in March. West Bengal Assembly polls 2026: States sees massive voter turnout of 92.47 pc

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal on Wednesday said that voter turnout in the West Bengal Assembly polls 2026 reached a staggering 92.47 per cent (combined across two phases), hailing the large participation of people in the electoral process, the ANI reported.  According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), polling in Phase II stood at 91.66 per cent till 7:45 pm. In Phase I, held on April 23, voter turnout was 93.19 per cent, taking the combined figure to 92.47 per cent across both phases. Voting across 142 seats in eight districts Addressing a press conference, the CEO said that polling was conducted across 142 Assembly seats in eight districts: Kolkata South, Kolkata North, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, and Purba Bardhaman the news agency reported.  He added that there were 41,001 polling booths in total.
