‘Uncle sends his regards’: Mumbai thieves use innovative WhatsApp codes to run pickpocket gang

Some perfectly normal phrases that may sound like casual greetings, like “uncle sends his regards” or “how is the weather today?”, carried a very different meaning for the ‘Dhakka gang’ of pickpockets in Mumbai. DCP Nalawade said the communication was less about planning the theft than checking whether it was safe to proceed. (Representative) According to a Times of India report, the MIDC Police Station team cracked the WhatsApp codes of the pickpocket gang, which ran a carefully orchestrated operation. The WhatsApp codes were allegedly used to know if every gang member was safe, if anyone was caught by the cops or if the day’s planning could be executed. The case revealed how Mumbai’s pickpockets have now gone high-tech, running their syndicate through smartphones and daily-changing WhatsApp codes. The daily changing code The investigation, led by DCP (West Zone 3) Datta Nalawade, revealed that the gang’s main kingpin contacted members every morning via WhatsApp. A new code was sent on WhatsApp every single day, like a one-time password. DCP Nalawade said the communication was less …

CBI claims NEET-UG 2026 paper leak spread via WhatsApp, Telegram before exam

CBI claims NEET-UG 2026 paper leak spread via WhatsApp, Telegram before exam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak was orchestrated through an extensive digital network in which confidential examination papers were circulated via WhatsApp, Telegram and electronic files several days before the examination. In a chargesheet filed before the Special CBI Court at Rouse Avenue, the agency claimed that forensic analysis of seized mobile phones and other electronic devices uncovered chats, PDF documents, photographs of question papers and other digital records that helped investigators trace the alleged movement of the leaked paper from National Testing Agency (NTA) subject experts to intermediaries and eventually to candidates. Meta Gives WhatsApp Group Chats a Productivity Boost

WhatsApp group chats are borrowing a few tricks from workplace platforms. Meta is dropping a new set of WhatsApp features to help make group conversations more organized, interactive, and productive. The update introduces various new tools designed to optimize communication in large groups, including anonymous polls, timed voting, @all mentions, and the ability to create new groups directly from existing conversations. While the changes may appear incremental on the surface, they are another step in WhatsApp’s evolution beyond consumer messaging, adding features that may better support workplace collaboration, community management, and event planning. New features target growing conversations The latest update, introduced on Aug. 4, mainly focuses on enhancing how users manage busy group chats. One of the top additions is anonymous polls, which allow members to vote without revealing their identities. Poll creators can also set time limits for voting, making the feature more useful for coordinating decisions with time-sensitive deadlines. WhatsApp is also introducing @all mentions, which enable administrators or members to notify everyone in a group simply with a single tag instead …

WhatsApp Web Finally Fixes One of Its Biggest Missing Features

WhatsApp Web Finally Fixes One of Its Biggest Missing Features

WhatsApp Web users no longer need the desktop app to make a call. Meta is rolling out end-to-end encrypted voice and video calling directly in the browser, alongside a Calls tab and several broader calling improvements. The change particularly benefits people using Linux, shared computers, low-storage devices, or work systems that restrict software installations. Browser calling closes one of the largest remaining gaps between WhatsApp Web and the platform’s mobile and desktop apps, although users will need to grant the site access to their microphone and camera. Web calling comes to WhatsApp web On July 28, WhatsApp announced Web Calling, bringing a long-expected feature to its browser-based platform. The addition allows users to initiate and receive WhatsApp calls in their browser, without switching to the desktop app or grabbing their phones. That means WhatsApp would now be able to request access to the microphone and camera, just like Zoom and Google Meet do. WhatsApp says the feature benefits students using shared computers, employees whose work devices restrict software installations, and users who simply prefer working …

Shashi Tharoor’s son asks for ‘boomers’ to be banned on WhatsApp, Congress MP outwits him

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is known for his way with words and sharp wit. His son, Ishaan Tharoor, would know that best. And if he somehow didn’t, he certainly does now, after his father delivered a classic quip—just for him. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Monday, July 20, 2026. (PTI) It all started with a post on X by Ishaan, in which he called for a ban on “boomers” using WhatsApp while agreeing with Zoho co-founder and former CEO Sridhar Vembu, who had sparked an online debate by suggesting that India should ban social media for young children. “I agree young kids should not be on social media at all. But India needs to ban Boomers on WhatsApp first before it does anything else,” Ishaan wrote on his X handle. Shashi Tharoor quickly pounced on his son’s remarks, saying that even Ishaan’s generation qualifies as “baby boomers”. “Given our reproductive patterns, my son, unlike in the West, every generation of Indians, including yours, qualifies as [baby]Boomers!” he …
