How China Is Rushing To Fill The Gaps Trump Is Creating

How China Is Rushing To Fill The Gaps Trump Is Creating

America, the leader of the free world, is once again hellbent on abdicating its global leadership responsibilities. Donald Trump is back, and so is his signature foreign policy move—cutting the US off from some key global organisations. He has, just like during his first term, decided that the World Health Organisation (WHO) doesn’t deserve US funding anymore. His reason is the same as before: the WHO did not act right during the Covid-19 pandemic and that it’s bent more favourably towards China.  The American contribution to WHO in 2024 was $950 million. This was nearly 15% of the organisation’s budget, making it the largest single donor out of 194 member countries. So, when Trump pulls out, it’s not just a dent—it’s a crater in the organisation’s budget.  The WHO is funded through two primary sources: assessed contributions, which are mandatory dues paid by the 194 member countries, calculated on factors like a country’s wealth and population, and voluntary contributions, which come from member states, private individuals, philanthropic organisations and other partners. A significant portion of …

Trump team considers demanding WHO reforms, including American in charge | News Today News

The Trump administration has been considering a plan for reform at the World Health Organization, including putting an American in charge, in order for it to remain a member of the global health agency, according to two sources familiar with the plan and a proposal document reviewed by Reuters. The document, shared with President Donald Trump’s advisors before his Jan. 20 inauguration, recommended that the United States quickly announce its withdrawal from the WHO and adopt a “radical new approach” for dealing with the agency, including pushing for a U.S. official to serve as director general when Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s term ends in 2027. Trump’s executive order to exit the WHO was among his first policy moves upon taking office. It would lead the global health agency to lose its single-biggest funder by Jan. 2026. Story continues below this ad The order accuses the organization of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and being unduly influenced by other nations, which the WHO denies. Trump has since suggested the U.S. could return if the WHO was “cleaned up,” …

Express View on Trump withdrawing from WHO: Clipping its wings could hurt not just poor and middle-income countries, but also the US

Express View on Trump withdrawing from WHO: Clipping its wings could hurt not just poor and middle-income countries, but also the US

Jan 24, 2025 07:40 IST First published on: Jan 24, 2025 at 07:40 IST Share Like his executive order to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Pact, Donald Trump’s decision to sever his country’s links with the WHO wasn’t unexpected. In his first stint at the White House, Trump had taken steps to quit the premier global health agency, accusing it of failing to incriminate China for the Covid pandemic. Hours after the inauguration of his second presidency, Trump repeated the accusations. The US president has directed his country’s agencies to “pause the transfer of any US government funds or resources to WHO”, and, “identify credible… partners to assume necessary activities previously undertaken by WHO”. His executive order is myopic regarding the UN body’s role in containing health emergencies across the world. There is no other organisation with the WHO’s reach and legitimacy that can deal with infectious diseases and devise protocols for containing cross-border outbreaks. The WHO’s expertise is also indispensable in reducing the incidence of serious non-communicable diseases such as cancer. …

“Don’t Need Players Who…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Stern ‘Star Culture’ Advice To BCCI

“Don’t Need Players Who…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Stern ‘Star Culture’ Advice To BCCI

File photo of Rohit Sharma© AFP Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to end the ‘star culture’ present in the Indian cricket team following the series loss against Australia. India’s World Test Championship (WTC) Final dreams were completely dashed after they slumped to a heavy loss against Australia in the Sydney Test on Sunday. Gavaskar said on Star Sports that the cricketers need to make themselves available for selection at all times unless there is a medical emergency and even advised the selectors to consider the players who are completely committed to the side. “I think the next 8–10 days are crucial for Indian cricket to take a good, honest look at itself. Most importantly, the star culture has to end. Total commitment to Indian cricket is non-negotiable. Players must make themselves available every single time unless there’s a genuine medical emergency. If someone isn’t fully committed, they shouldn’t be considered for selection,” said Gavaskar. Gavaskar did not hold back in his criticism of the …
