‘Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’ brings feisty flavour to murder mystery

By Hanna Rantala ‘Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’ brings feisty flavour to murder mystery LONDON, – Makers of the new Netflix series “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials” hope to introduce a new generation to the queen of crime, the iconic author of more than 60 mystery novels. The three-part show debuting Thursday is based on Christie’s 1929 novel “The Seven Dials Mystery” and stars “How to Have Sex” actor Mia McKenna-Bruce as a bright young aristocrat, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent. When a guest dies in suspicious circumstances during a glitzy gathering at her country mansion, Bundle takes it upon herself to find out what happened. Her wits, determination and seven clocks left on the scene lead Bundle to a shadowy scheme. “The fact that Bundle’s kind of leading the charge, this young, fearless, feisty girl, something that we haven’t seen very much of, I think that really gives it a new, exciting feel,” said McKenna-Bruce at a London premiere on Tuesday, the day after the 50th anniversary of Christie’s death. The whodunit also stars Helena Bonham Carter …

Murder Mubarak movie review: Self-aware satire that mostly delivers on the whodunit promise | Bollywood

Murder Mubarak movie review: By the time it ends, the temptation to weigh it alongside The White Lotus and the Knives Out franchise, too, disappears. Because Murder Mubarak isn’t essentially just about a bunch of rich pricks socialising at an angrezon ke zamaane ka (colonial) country club. It’s a self-aware satire piece that ultimately works out. (Also Read – OTT releases to watch this weekend: Murder Mubarak to Bramayugam, Main Atal Hoon to Big Girls Don’t Cry and more) Murder Mubarak movie review: Vijay Varma and Sara Ali Khan headline this whodunit The beginning of Murder Mubarak feels somewhat pretentious, as a roll call of high-society generic characters is introduced with monikers that are supposed to be shorthand for their character descriptions – all the while when a child goes about looking for a cat named Prince Harry. Karisma Kapoor plays a movie star whose stardom borders on washed-up, somewhat close to her contemporary Raveena Tandon in the recent Karmma Calling. Ashim Gulati and Suhail Nayyar co-starred in Jee Karda, another project set in a …

A Haunting In Venice Review: Kenneth Branagh’s Classic Whodunit Breaks Genre Norms

Kenneth Branagh in a shot from the film. (Courtesy: YouTube) A pensive but evocative take on a lesser-known, late-career Agatha Christie novel, A Haunting In Venice finds Kenneth Branagh, the director and the actor, in a far more subdued zone than the ones that he was in Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, his two previous Hercule Poirot adaptations. In tone and tenor, Branagh’s third outing with the queen of crime is more ambience and atmosphere than flourish and vigour. Its visual style does not bank so much on scale and grandeur as it does on the specificities of location and mood. That works wonders and makes A Haunting In Venice the best that Branagh has done with Agatha Christie. The 103-minute film is not only redolent of the period – a couple of years after end of World War II – but also of the mysteries of the nocturnal that seek attention when darkness descends on a dimly-lit Venetian manor that has seen better days.   Michael Greene’s minimalist screenplay relocates …
