Let’s talk to sons, on what it is to be man and women

Let’s talk to sons, on what it is to be man and women

Recently, my son, 21, bought me an intimidatingly thick diary called Mom, I Want to Hear Your Story. You like writing, he asserted firmly when I protested, flipping through this guided journal that gently prods through my personal history and memories. Questions include details of my first date and my biggest fears during childhood. The journal’s author, Jeffrey Mason, has left ample space to answer the difficult query: Based upon all you have learned and experienced, what advice would you give me? It’s been a rewarding if somewhat discomfiting experience to look back at successes and failures, and articulate them honestly. Each of us has a unique life journey to share. For mothers, there’s never been a more urgent time to have long conversations on what it means to be men and women in India, today. Triggering is an overused, new age term but it’s apt in the context of the desperate brutality perpetrated on a young Kolkata medic. The truth is that deep within, many men have been raised to loathe women. And the …

Living with PMS and reels

For a week every month, I am Anger, Sadness and Anxiety from the Pixar hit Inside Out 2, all rolled into one. Add a dash of Ennui to the cocktail too. Husband and I get into a minor argument? Cue the waterworks, one that leaves me with a nasty headache and an awful cold. Dishes not washed? There is probably a flaming ball of fire over my head at the sight of it. My bed is my best friend to wallow in existential dread, watching endless mind-numbing reels on Instagram. Another recipe for a cake? Swipe. Movie recommendations? Hmm, maybe I’ll save it for later. A cute cat? Give me more such dopamine hits. If this emotional roller coaster wasn’t enough, pain makes a quiet appearance. Radiating from ankle to knee, it leaves me feeling like I am a 70-year-old and not 31. Sounds familiar? You, like me, are battling Premenstrual Syndrome aka PMS. A simple Google search throws up a list of symptoms: bloating, weight gain, mood swings, feeling upset, anxious or emotional. Most …

(Also read: Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi) movie review: Nag Ashwin offers a chaotic sci-fi epic; stellar 2nd half redeems a dull beginning) Sharmajee Ki Beti review: Divya Dutta in a still from the movie. Celebrating women and womanhood across ages, this film is like a warm cup of masala tea with a slice of zingy lemon that soothes your senses. It’s simple, genuine, fun and feels like a group hug with women telling each other how special they are. The narrative weaves together stories of three different women, with the same surname, Sharma. While these tracks are running parallel, their characters bump into each other at one point, briefly enough to make us …
