BJP using women’s reservation as ‘political shield’ for divisive motives: Supriya Shrinate| India News

New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of using women’s reservation as a “political shield” for divisive motives. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate says BJP is “rattled” after bill setback Speaking at a press briefing at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office on Sunday, Shrinate said that the ruling party is “rattled” because the opposition has exposed their “conspiracies.” A Constitution amendment bill to expand the size of the Lok Sabha and fast-track 33% reservation for women failed to garner the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a 30-minute address to the nation on Saturday evening said the Congress was a parasite on regional parties and opposed to any kind of reform because of selfish politics and insecurity. He added that the four main opposition parties—the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress and the DMK— that helped block the amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will face the consequences. “It (bill) was brought with good intention, honesty and was …

Why can’t women’s quota be implemented in existing House of 543? What Oppn, govt have said, and why OBC question remains| India News

After the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 fell in the Lok Sabha on Friday — the first defeat of a bill in PM Narendra Modi’s government of 12 years so far — one question cuts through the noise of the political battle: Why can’t 33% reservation for women simply be implemented in the existing 543-seat Lok Sabha, right now? The plan, which failed, was to increase the Lok Sabha seats by a flat 50% for now to 816, to a maximum of 850 at some point; and thus give one-third reservation to women as these additional seats are created. The Opposition was up in arms against this seat-increase and delimitation exercise being hastened by using old census data even as larger questions remained unanswered. Legal position of 2023 law The 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies is already law. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was passed unanimously by Parliament in September 2023, and notified in the gazette just this week, on April 16, 2026, even when a debate on its …

Congress to push for women reservation within existing Lok Sabha seats| India News

The Congress will try to push for 33% women’s reservation within the existing 543 seats in the Lok Sabha and push the government to delay the proposed delimitation exercise for a more equitable distribution of seats, rather than a 50% proportional increase in every state’s parliamentary strength, leaders aware of the details said on Monday. Congress to push for women reservation within existing Lok Sabha seats The upcoming special sitting of Parliament, from April 16 to 18, is set to delink the implementation of women’s reservation from the census. “The Opposition has its task cut out for the upcoming session,” said a senior Congress leader. “It has to oppose the delimitation bill but offer full support for the amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. It also has to formulate a common strategy and ensure its members are present in large numbers to oppose the delimitation bill during voting in both Houses.” Referring to an article written by Sonia Gandhi on the issue, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Sonia Gandhi asserts that the real issue …
