Shrachi Bengal Tigers moved into the second spot after securing a 1-0 victory against Ranchi Royals in the women’s Hockey India League at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium on Sunday in Ranchi. It was a familiar name on the scoresheet against as ace dragflicker Agustina Gorzelany (37’) scored the decisive goal of the game to help her side register three points, and reverse a 0-5 defeat against Royals from their previous meeting. Heading into this match on the back of consecutive wins, Royals began the game on the front foot with their midfield controlling the tempo in the opening exchanges. They had five penalty corners and seven circle penetrations in the first quarter, but couldn’t find a way past Jennifer Rizzo in goal for the Tigers. Playing on the counter attack, the Tigers had a late opportunity of their own before Bichu Devi Kharibam pulled off a couple of sharp saves for the home side towards the end of a stop-start first quarter that went on for nearly 30 minutes with numerous …

During the mini-auction before Women’s Hockey India League, Shrachi Bengal Tigers spent 42 lakhs on Argentine player Agustina Gorzelany and the reasoning behind the decision was evident in their season opener against Soorma Hockey Club on Monday. In a game dominated by Soorma in terms of circle penetrations, possession and penalty corners won, it was Gorzelany’s 11th minute strike that was the differentiator between the win and loss. Who are the captains, key Indian and overseas stars for four franchises – a quick guide for second season

The second edition of Women’s HIL comes at a critical juncture for Indian hockey. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the national team, having missed out on World Cup qualification through Asia Cup and the subsequent departure of head coach Harendra Singh under rather controversial circumstances. A World Cup qualifier in Hyderabad in March offers the last chance to qualify for the marquee tournament, and players would be hoping to make their mark across four teams. SG Pipers Captain: Navneet Kaur Key Indian player: Deepika Key overseas player: Kaitlin Nobbs (AUS) What’s changed: A coaching overhaul after finishing last in the first edition sees Belgium’s Sofie Gierts take over the reins. She has the rare distinction of having coached a men’s team in Belgium’s top division with Royal Uccle. With Navneet and Deepika, Pipers have opted for continuity in Indian talent. Ranchi Royals Captain: Nikki Pradhan Key Indian player: Neha Goyal Key overseas player: Agostina Alonso (ARG) What’s changed: Replacing inaugural season winners Odisha Warriors, the Ranchi franchisee had Harendra Singh at the auction …

Women’s Hockey India League: Soorma score four times in frantic 10-minute spell to begin with a win | Hockey News

Down by a goal after just seven minutes, Soorma Hockey Club scored four times in a frantic 10-minute period to begin their women’s Hockey India League campaign with an emphatic 4-1 win over Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers 4-1 in Ranchi on Monday. In the men’s league match, meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Dragons defeated Delhi SG Pipers 3-2. Hannah Cotter put the Tigers in front against the run of play. The New Zealand international received the ball after the Tigers got a free hit in a dangerous area and fired a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to score her – and her team’s – first goal of the season. Soorma, who hadn’t done a lot wrong until then, continued to press but did not have much to show. In search of an equaliser, Soorma won the first penalty corner of the match in the 11th minute but Penny Squibb’s drag-flick was deflected well by the Tigers. Although the Tigers had chances to double their lead, Soorma controlled the flow with some relentless attacking hockey. Soorma won four …

Women’s HIL auction: Ex-India coach Janneke Schopman’s return headlines day with intriguing subplots | Hockey News

Whether Janneke Schopman’s tenure as India’s women’s hockey head coach was a success or not is a debate that might not have a clear verdict, but what is undeniable is the bond she built with the players during her tenure. She says some of them have stayed in touch with her. That is also the reason why despite taking up a technical role with the German team, she kept the door open for any opportunity in the inaugural women’s Hockey India League. The end to Schopman’s stint wasn’t without its share of controversy, but on Tuesday the former Dutch star was back… in Orange, as the coach of Odisha Warriors. “I love India, I love the girls, I am happy that I have another opportunity to work with them,” she said. Is there unfinished business? “Not really, I did it with all my heart and it didn’t work for us (qualifying for Paris) and I always regret that.” A fresh start? “Yes, of course.” Backed by Schopman’s intimate knowledge of the Indian senior and junior …

Hockey India League auction: Attention turns to women’s event but with only four teams instead of six | Hockey News

The buzz on the day of the Hockey India League’s official launch event was around the inaugural women’s league for the sport in the country. The six-team event was to be held concurrently with the men’s tournament, which was making a comeback after seven years. However, there will now be just four teams — at least for the first season. “Two of the women’s franchises will be announced shortly after the closure of legal proceedings in the coming days,” was the official statement. That did happen, as Hyderabad Toofans (who also own a men’s team) and a Mumbai franchise to be owned by BC Jindal Group were confirmed by Hockey India. But there was a catch: these two teams won’t be part of the upcoming season but will only take part from Season 2. “After we announced that there would be six teams, Roundglass unfortunately had to miss out (both men’s and women’s). We do have two new teams confirmed, with Hyderabad Toofans and a Mumbai franchise owned by BC Jindal joining in. But on …
