Hockey India League: Bengal Tigers qualify for Women’ HIL final after prevailing against SG Pipers in tense sudden death | Hockey News

The two teams that missed the cut for the final in the inaugural edition of Women’s Hockey India League will now clash for the title in the second season. For the second time in the league phase this year, there was nothing to separate Bengal Tigers and SG Pipers after four quarters of regulation time, and sudden death in the penalty shootout was required to determine who takes the bonus point, where Tigers prevailed 7-6 after 10 attempts for each team. With Tigers securing two points, Ranchi Royals were eliminated from the race for top two while Pipers had already qualified for the final that will be played on Saturday. The script was a bit different this time around as the first meeting between them ended in a high-scoring 3-3 draw, while the reverse fixture in Ranchi on Tuesday was a tense goalless affair. The Pipers were under defensive pressure for most of the evening but managed to keep the tournament’s leading goalscorer Agustina Gorzelany quiet from Penalty Corners, thanks largely to some excellent first-rushing …

SG Pipers come from behind to beat JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3-1 in Women’s Hockey India League | Hockey News

SG Pipers stayed top of the standings as they defeated JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3-1 in their Women’s Hero Hockey India League encounter at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Saturday. Even though Soorma managed to end their long wait for a goal in the tournament and took the lead on the night, the defeat all but ends their hope of finishing in the top two. For the Pipers, Lola Riera (13’), Jyoti Singh (18’), and Sunelita Toppo (58’) scored a goal each, while Penny Squibb (12’) netted the only goal for the Soorma. The opening quarter saw an intense end-to-end battle, with the teams trading early attacks and testing each other in a high-tempo start. Soorma struck first when Squibb – who missed a Penalty Stroke on Friday in the defeat against Ranchi Royals – converted a penalty corner to give her side the lead. SG Pipers responded immediately, maintaining their attacking pressure and earning back-to-back penalty corners. Their persistence finally paid off on the fifth attempt, with Riera …

Hockey India League: Soorma HC remain goalless, winless as Ranchi Royals prevail 2-0 with goals from Rutuja, Sakshi | Hockey News

They huffed, they puffed and – for a third straight match – couldn’t break their opponents’ house down. Soorma Hockey Club’s start to Women’s Hockey India League went from bad to worse as they suffered a hat-trick of defeats and are yet to score a goal after 12 quarters of hockey that has seen them make 87 circle entries in all. And it was again of their own doing. Soorma had a golden opportunity to score via a Penalty Stroke and take the lead at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium in Ranchi on Friday night. But Penny Squibb failed to convert from the spot, thanks to a great save by goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo, and Soorma found themselves chasing the match shortly after. Excellent field goals by Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (30′) and Sakshi Rana (54′) gave Royals their second win in three matches. Defences were on top in the first quarter as both sides hardly made any errors or gave away good chances to their opposition. Royals held more possession in the beginning, however Soorma made …
