After hours of standoff between a group of Nihangs and the administration at the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border here, the group returned to Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh in the early hours of Friday following negotiations with authorities. The development brought an end to the tension that prevailed at the Kulhal checkpoint in the Vikasnagar area on Thursday night, where a large group of the Sikh sect clashed with the police. Japan is facing a surge in human-bear encounters, leading to a shortage of its ‘Monster Wolf’ — a solar-powered robot built to look like a wild predator and scare away pests. It uses motion sensors, flashing lights, and loud noises to frighten animals. When its infrared sensors detect movement, the robot’s head jerks from side to side, while a rapid blue LED flashes on its tail.  It also includes a speaker with over 50 randomised audio clips to prevent animals from becoming desensitised to the threat. Three former Supreme Court justices have joined more than 600 members of the British legal profession in calling for the government to halt arms sales to Israel, saying it could make Britain complicit in genocide in Gaza. Their call was also backed by two of the country’s leading intelligence experts, who argued that Britain needed to use any leverage it could to persuade Israel, and its biggest backer the United States, to change course in the conflict. The British government has been a staunch ally of Israel since the eruption of hostilities on Oct. 7 but Foreign Secretary David Cameron has hardened his language in recent months over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Greek authorities said an F-16 fighter jet crashed in the Aegean Sea during a training flight Wednesday. The pilot ejected from the aircraft and was later rescued. The incident occurred near the small island of Psathoura, 175 kilometres (110 miles) northeast of Athens, after the single-seat jet fighter took off from an air base in central Greece. The pilot was rescued by a helicopter launched as part of a joint mission by the military and the coast guard, the air force said. The pilot was hospitalized for observation. Greece is currently upgrading its F-16 fleet as part of a major military modernization program aimed at keeping pace with regional rival Turkey. Wednesday’s crash occurred hours after Greece took delivery of three US-made MH-60R Seahawk navy helicopters at a ceremony near Athens.
