Wrestler Deepak Punia turns accidental weight change to a golden opportunity

Lucknow: Olympian Deepak Punia returned to the Indian national wrestling team after a year by winning the Asian Games Trials here at SAI Lucknow on Sunday. Punia, who has been battling injuries for the past two years, suffered another setback recently when he was unable to cut weight for his usual 86kg category due to an injury. As a result, he was forced to switch to the 97kg weight class. However, the change didn’t affect him much, as he powered through the trials with some impressive victories. “I was only training for the 86kg category and had no plans to switch,” said Punia after his win. “But 5-6 days ago, I suffered a muscle tear that didn’t allow me to cut weight. So, I had no option but to move up to 97kg,” he added. The injury might have forced him to compete in 97kg, but Punia didn’t want to put on extra weight beyond his body’s tolerance and was only 95kg at the weigh-in. Despite that, he continued to dominate on the mat, especially …

How wrestler Shiksha Kharb keeps fighting

Bellary: At 19, Shiksha Kharb has seen more than most athletes her age have. More than two serious injuries threatened to halt her progressive career even before it had begun. But the ultimate pursuit of an Olympic medal has always motivated the strong-willed teenager to keep going. “Last year, just before the Junior Nationals, I had a labrum tear along with a SLAP lesion and a cyst, because of which my back muscles stopped functioning properly. I underwent surgery in August,” Shiksha told The Bridge. “In 2024, before the Under-23 World Championships, I recovered from MCL and PCL injuries along with a Grade 2 cartilage tear on my left knee,” she added. Despite the challenges, Shiksha, a budding wrestler from Bhada Khera – a small village near Hisar in Haryana, has added numerous national and international medals to her kitty. Some prominent ones include the U-23 World Championships bronze medal in 2024, a silver U23 Asian Championships last year in Vietnam and another silver in the Senior World Ranking Series event. Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal becomes world no 1 in 65kg in UWW rankings | Sport-others News

2 min readApr 17, 2026 11:07 PM IST Recently crowned Asian champion in the men’s freestyle 65kg category, Indian wrestler Sujeet Kalkal became the world number one wrestler in the latest updated rankings of the United World Wrestling on Friday. Sujeet, the reigning U23 World Champion, surged ahead of World Champion Rahman Mousa Amouzadkhalili of Iran and Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka of Japan in the rankings. Last week, the 23-year-old’s 8-1 win in the final over last year’s World Championship bronze medallist, Uzbekistan’s Umidjon Jalolov, landed India’s first men’s freestyle gold at 65kg since 2019 at the Asian Wrestling championships, ending a seven-year wait in a weight category considered the deepest and toughest in the discipline. Overall, it ended a three-year drought for Indian men’s freestyle gold at the Asians. India has won gold at 65kg just twice since 2015 — both times through Bajrang Punia, who went on to win bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. “Winning or losing isn’t in my hands,” Sujeet told UWW. “But it is my job to give my best …

Wrestler Lalit blanked in final, misses final but coach sees silver lining

3 min readUpdated: Apr 7, 2026 11:07 PM IST Maybe, it was the big-match nerves that got the better of Indian Greco-Roman wrestler Lalit in the final of the 55 kg at the Asian Championships in Kyrgyzstan. But for coach Kuldeep Singh, the loss came with a silver lining. On Tuesday, Lalit, 23, lost 0-9 to the two-time Asian Championships medallist Ikhtiyor Botirov to settle for silver, his first-ever senior championships medal. Despite the disheartening technical superiority loss, this was a memorable outing for the Panipat wrestler, who had taken down the 2025 World Championships medallist and World No.4 Huoying Shi of China in the semi-finals. Coach Kuldeep was pleased that his ward achieved the goal of making it to the podium. “The Uzbek wrestler (Botirov) is an experienced one. I think in such high-voltage finals the experience comes into play,” he told The Indian Express. “Lalit is a technical wrestler but he needs to work on power. Now, we know that if he needs to win consistently at the Asian level, he needs to …

From delivering milk to winning first career gold, J&K wrestler Hamam Hussain’s dreams come true

When Jammu and Kashmir’s Hamam Hussain isn’t busy with wrestling practice he helps his elder brother deliver milk door-to-door. Hussain and his elder brother have been selling milk to earn a living for their family ever since their father passed away five years ago while also keeping his wrestling dream alive. All those efforts finally came to fruition at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 here when the 28-year-old wrestler from Jorawar village in Jammu clinched the men’s 79kg freestyle gold beating Mohit Kumar of Himachal Pradesh to clinch his first gold medal at a national level in his 14 year wrestling career. “My elder brother was also a wrestler and had competed at the state level. After our father passed away, all responsibilities came on our shoulders. My brother had to quit wrestling and started selling milk.
