Aman Sehrawat, Deepak Punia to lead India at Asian Olympic qualifiers

Sonipat: Asian Games medallist Aman Sehrawat and Olympian Deepak Punia will lead India’s challenge at the Asian Olympic qualifiers for wrestling at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Aman emerged victorious in the 57kg category while Deepak dominated the 86kg men’s freestyle wrestling trials at SAI Centre in Sonipat, Haryana, on Sunday. Aman Sehrawat reigns supreme U23 world champion Aman fought in a tough field of 57kg featuring Olympic medallist Ravi Dahiya and U20 Asian champion Udit. The 57kg trial was conducted in the Nordic system which is a round-robin format as only seven wrestlers registered for the trials. Aman and Ravi were drawn into the same group. They came across each other in the second bout. After defeating Udit 12-4 in the first round, Aman faced his Chhatrasaal Stadium senior in the second. Ravi started with a lead of 4-2 but Aman dominated him throughout the first half and 12-4 at one point. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat did one thing as a routine since losing the 2022 Commonwealth Games trials to Olympic silver medallist Ravi Dahiya. He watched the video of the bout in which he was soundly thrashed. Again and again, everyday, he says. The 10-0 result had rankled 20-year-old Aman, six years Dahiya’s junior. “It was not easy, not a single day has passed since the Commonwealth Games till this morning when I did not watch that video. It was not easy to beat him today. There was pressure but it feels good to have my first win over him,” Sehrawat said. On Sunday, Sehrawat’s 8-4 lead became 13-9 before Dahiya closed the gap to 14-11 and then 14-13. Sonipat: It was a day of big upsets as the big boys of Indian wrestling Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya lost on the first day of wrestling trials for the upcoming Asian Olympic qualifiers at the Sushil Kumar-Yogeshwar Dutt Wrestling Hall, SAI Centre, Sonipat in Haryana on Sunday. 2020 Tokyo Olympic medalists Bajrang and Ravi lost in the 65kg and 57kg trials for the upcoming Asian Olympic qualifiers, to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Multiple World Championships medallist Bajrang was stunned by Rohit Kumar in the semifinals as Rohit prevailed in the one-sided contest 9-1. Bajrang took a point at the start as Rohit was warned for passivity. However, Rohit wasn’t passive afterwards and pushed Bajrang out of the mat twice in the first round to take a lead of 2-1. Rohit came out more aggressively in the second half and took down Bajrang with a powerful move to win four points and lead 6-2. WFI pulls back circular, Ad-Hoc committee to conduct wrestling trials

Following a petition at the Delhi Court, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to withdraw its circular on conducting the selection trials for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 and the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Wrestling Tournament. Taking note of the statement made by WFI’s counsel, Justice Sachin Datta said the trials shall proceed as per the circular issued by the ad-hoc committee supervising the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India. The ad-hoc committee of the WFI issued a press release on February 9 saying it will hold the trials for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers (April 19-21) and World Olympic Qualifiers (May 9-12) on March 10 and 11 at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala and Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex in Sonipat. The Indian Olympic Association had on December 27 constituted a three-member ad hoc committee to run the day-to-day affairs of the WFI after the Union Sports Ministry suspended the national body for wrestling for not following the provisions of its constitution while taking decisions. “After some arguments, …

Wrestler Antim Panghal injured, set to miss trials for Asian C’ships

New Delhi: When it looked like Indian wrestling was coming back on track, one of India’s medal prospects Antim Panghal was dealt an injury blow and is set to miss the first set of Wrestling trials. Only a few days are left for the upcoming trials for the Asian Championships and the continental Olympics qualifiers and Antim will be missing both of them. She doesn’t need to play in the Olympic qualifiers after winning the Paris Olympics in the women’s 53 kg category by winning a bronze medal at the World Championships last year. But the Asian championship was crucial for her as the field would have Japanese wrestlers in it.
