Police arrested a “strong person of interest” Monday in the brazen Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO after a quick-thinking McDonald’s employee in Pennsylvania alerted authorities to a customer who was found with a weapon and writings linking him to the ambush. The suspect was being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and eventually will be extradited to New York.(AFP) The suspect, identified by police as 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in last Wednesday’s shooting of Brian Thompson, as well as writings suggesting anger with corporate America, police said. Mangione was taken into custody about 9:15 a.m. after police got a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, police said. “He is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Three books based on late CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury’s writings on culture, media, science, and secularism were released Friday. Published by the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) and Tulika Books, the three books include Hindu Rashtra Hai Kya, a Hindi translation of Yechury’s 1993 English book. The other two are: The Fight For The Republic, which has three essays, two devoted to Hindutva and one to India @75; and Reflections on Culture, Media and Science. Yechury passed away on September 12 at AIIMS, Delhi. Former Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Saturday said that Mahakavi Gurajada Apparao’s social messages through his great literary works continue to be relevant in today’s society. On behalf of Gurajada Samskrutika Samakhya, Justice Ramana presented the annual Gurajada puraskaram to eminent writer and director Meegada Ramalinga Swamy in a function organised on occasion of Gurajada’s death anniversary. Speaking as the chief guest, he said that Gurajada’s literary contribution is unparelled as every character in his book teaches a lesson which applies to our everyday life. He urged parents to teach the Telugu language to their kids, upholding Gurajada’s belief that children who are strong in their mother tongue would be adept at other languages as well.
