Mumbai Open 2026: Sahaja Yamalapalli handed wild card

India’s No 1 women’s singles player, Sahaja Yamalapalli, has been given a wild card into the main draw at the upcoming 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series, which will be held at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) in Mumbai. The main draw is scheduled from 2 to 8 February, 2026. In 2025, Sahaja made positive strides on the court highlighted by her ITF Tampico campaign, where she reached the women’s doubles semi final with Mexico’s Jessica Hinojosa Gomeza . She also played a major role in India’s second placed finish in the Asia-Oceania Group 1 stage of the Billie Jean King Cup in Pune and was also part of the team during the Play-Offs held in Bengaluru. Sahaja Yamalapalli reaches Punta Cana semis; Vaidehi Chaudhari falls in Thailand

Sahaja Yamalapalli, who is poised to become India’s No. 1 women’s singles player, advanced to the semifinals of the ITF W35 Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on Saturday morning. The promising Hyderabadi player secured a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4) over Colombian qualifier Valentina Mediorreal Arias, setting up a semifinal clash against Darja Vidmanova of Czechia. Sahaja, who previously won the ITF W15 title in Los Angeles in June and the ITF SoCal Pro Series in July in the USA, is now aiming for her third title of the year. In contrast, Vaidehi Chaudhari’s campaign at the ITF W35 Nakhon Si Thammarat in Thailand ended in the semifinals. She went down to Mariia Tkacheva 5-7, 1-6. Earlier, the seventh-seeded Vaidehi had cruised past qualifier Anri Nagata in the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win, marking her third consecutive straight-set victory in the tournament. Sahaja Yamalapalli set to become India’s No. 1 women’s singles player

Sahaja Yamalapalli is set to become India’s new No. 1 women’s singles player. The 23-year-old is currently ranked 303rd in the Live WTA rankings. She will surpass Ankita Raina, who has been holding India’s No. 1 position since 2018. Ankita is currently ranked 283rd in the WTA rankings. But her recent streak of poor performance will see Sahaja rise in the rankings and replace her. The latest change in rankings will be reflected on September 9. In July this year, Sahaja’s moment of reckoning arrived when she became only the third Indian women’s tennis player to win an ITF pro title as she clinched the SoCal Pro Series in the United States. Sahaja, who hails from Hyderabad, joined legendary Sania Mirza, the six-time Grand Slam winner, and Karman Thandi to achieve this feat. In June, she won the ITF W15 USA women’s singles title in Los Angeles after winning all her matches in straight sets. The impressive runs of Indian challengers Sahaja Yamalapalli Rutuja Bhosale came to an end as they lost their respective pre-quarterfinals on Thursday. Yamalapalli and Bhosale went down fighting in their pre-quarter-final matches of the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series Tennis Championships, being organized by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA). The 23-year-old Yamalapalli, a wild card entrant and ranked 336 had a chance against the 162nd-ranked 20-year-old Russian girl but blew them away and suffered a 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 defeat in close to two hours. Bhosale, another wildcard entrant showed a lot of promise initially before losing to eighth seed Katie Volynets of America earlier in the day. The 22-year-old American beat back a determined challenge from the 27-year-old Indian by carving out a satisfying 7-6(8), 2-6, 6-1 win in just under three hours to advance to the last eight. Volynets has now defeated a second successive Indian opponent after having beaten India No. 1 Ankita Raina in the opening round.
