10 dead as Yamuna boat capsizes near Keshi Ghat

What began as pilgrimage, turned into a nightmare for several families from Punjab as boat carrying tourists capsized in Yamuna in Vrindavan on Friday, leaving 10 people dead, 22 injured and five missing. Of the 10 who died, nine are from Punjab and one from Haryana. Of the nine deceased from Punjab, five are from Jagraon, a small semi-rural town of Punjab’s Ludhiana district from where two buses carrying at least 132 pilgrims had left for Vrindavan on Thursday. A group of 25-30 pilgrims decided to go boating at Keshi Ghat on Yamuna river where the tragedy struck after the boat reportedly crashed into a floating pontoon drum. The tragedy has left several families shattered with deceased including two couples, a mother-son duo among others. At least 10 people from Punjab’s Ludhiana district drowned in the river Yamuna in the Hindu holy town of Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh on Friday afternoon, after one of two boats they’d hired for a joyride capsized, and those on the other also fell in. Officials said boat collided with a floating pontoon left behind after a bridge was dismantled recently. Most of the victims belonged to Jagraon town in Ludhiana, it is learnt. “It appears that one of the boats went out of control and lost balance after colliding with a pontoon bridge on the river,” said Shailesh Pandey, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Agra range. According to officials, the visit aimed at assessing preparedness ahead of the summer and monsoon seasons, while reviewing the progress of Yamuna’s restoration. During the inspection, officials noted that Vasudev Ghat developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) was an eco-friendly public space, while Yamuna Bazar Ghat needed further development. The LG directed agencies to timely rejuvenate the entire floodplain stretch from Palla to Kalindi Kunj. The Delhi government’s Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Department has issued a tender to procure two boats for monitoring, survey, and inspection operations on the Yamuna river, officials said, the IANS reported. The move comes as the department seeks dedicated vessels to assist in river monitoring, flood management, and inspection visits by senior officials. The tender, floated on March 12, seeks two boats at an estimated combined cost of around Rs 6.2 crore, with each vessel priced at approximately Rs 3.1 crore. The procurement is expected to be completed within five months after the bidding process concludes, which is slated for March 19. Each boat will be designed to accommodate 16 to 20 persons and will measure about 13 metres in length, 4.3 metres in width, and 2.1 metres in height. The Delhi government is planning to launch a Yamuna cruise service on February 20, as the flagship event of celebrations marking the first anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party coming to power, said officials. (HT Archive) The central government will set up and operate two monitoring stations on the Yamuna River, near the Hathnikund and Okhla barrages, in an attempt to establish an independent monitoring mechanism for tracking the e-flow of the river, government officials said on Tuesday. Restoring the ecological flow of the highly polluted Yamuna is a key component of the river rejuvenation plan. Once complete, the two stations will enable real-time monitoring of the river parameters and its flow, officials said. An official aware of the matter said that the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has granted administrative approvals. “The project will be executed under the Namami Gange Mission with central government providing ₹1.56 crore for both the stations. Around ₹1 crore would be spent on equipment while remaining money on boards and other assets,” the official said.
