School headmaster held sexual assault of 13-year-old student in Yavatmal

Police have arrested a 47-year-old headmaster of a Zilla Parishad school in Yavatmal district in Maharashtra for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl student, police officials said on Monday, reported the PTI. The accused, who headed a school in Ghatanji taluka, was taken into custody on Sunday following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father. According to the police, the Class 7 student was allegedly sexually assaulted by the headmaster on two separate occasions, on February 5 this year and May 1, 2025. The incidents reportedly took place after the accused lured the minor with fruits and cosmetic items. Officials said the accused also allegedly threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed the incidents to anyone, instilling fear and preventing her from speaking out earlier. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the accused. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape and criminal intimidation. The water crisis in parts of Maharashtra has deepened, with women in the villages of Arni tehsil, Yavatmal district, facing severe challenges in accessing water for daily use. Villagers are forced to walk 2 to 3 kilometres each day to fetch water as the wells and handpumps are running dry. Often made on foot and across rough terrain, the journey has become a daily struggle, especially for women who bear the brunt of household water collection duties. While speaking to ANI, Pooja, a resident of one of the affected villages, said, “We are scared of slipping and falling. The paths are uneven, and it`s a long walk. But we have no choice. The incident took place at Manorma Jain Dal Mill located in the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area in Yavatmal on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) evening, they said. The storage unit broke and fell on five workers, a police official said. Three workers were killed in the incident. Two other workers suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment in a hospital, the official said. Two of the deceased were from Madhya Pradesh and one hailed from Wardha district in Maharashtra, the police said. Yavatmal farmer consumes pesticide near Maharashtra legislature complex

A Maharashtra`s Yavatmal farmer tried to end his life by consuming pesticide near the Maharashtra legislature complex in Nagpur on Tuesday, police said, reported the PTI. The news agency reported, the farmer was distressed over crop loss and mounting debts.  The Police, however, acted quickly and rushed him to the hospital. He has been kept under observation, said inspector Narendra Hiwre of Sitabuldi police station.The winter session of the Maharashtra legislature is currently underway at the Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur, as per the PTI. As resident doctors protested against the attack on doctors by a patient in Yavatmal’s government hospital, the association has now written a letter to the Minister of Medical Education of Maharashtra raising their concern and asking for security measures. The student council in Yavatmal’s government hospital had a meeting with the authority along with the minister on Friday morning related to the attack and further security measures to be taken. According to the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), the lack of safety and security measures in government-run hospitals are the main reason for such attacks on medical professionals by patients and their relatives. The doctor who was attacked by the patient suffered a major injury on his neck on Thursday. The injured doctor was taken for surgery and admitted to the ICU ward.
