Audit of fundamental rights’ effectiveness could yield ‘uncomfortable’ findings: J. Chelameswar

Former Supreme Court judge J. Chelameswar on Saturday (May 30, 2026) expressed doubts over how effectively the Constitution’s fundamental rights protect common people. He said an audit on the matter could yield “very uncomfortable” findings. He made the critical remarks while inaugurating a two-day national conference at the Government Law College, Ernakulam, on ‘Shaping the Future of Legal Education: Innovation, Practice and Reforms’. “The Constitution textually guarantees fundamental rights. However, if a proper audit is conducted on how the guarantees work to protect the common man in practice, the report would be very uncomfortable. I do not have any statistics. I am speaking from my life experiences,” Mr. Chelameswar said. “All that it requires to deprive the liberty of an individual is that somebody in the government must believe that the activity of the person is detrimental to the sovereignty of the country,” he added. He stressed that in which direction the constitutional system is progressing is a matter for each one in the judicial fraternity to examine. He said it was important to understand …

India has 89 Ramsar sites, which are wetlands deemed to be of international importance under the 1971 Ramsar Convention held in Iran. The sixth waterbird census covering 189 beels (wetlands with still water) in the tiger reserve encompassing smaller protected areas and a section of the Brahmaputra River was conducted over two days in January. The report was released on Sunday to mark the World Wetlands Day. The population estimation yielded 124 species of water and wetland-dependent local and migratory birds totalling 1,12,062 individuals – 23,352 more than the number counted in 2024 – from 25 families. Of the 124 species, 62 were winter migrants. A total of 47,133 individuals belonging to 88 species were recorded from the Rowmari and Donduwa beels. Connected by a narrow channel, these two beels are in the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary under the Nagaon Wildlife Division …

He stated that production of millets was …

Haryana assembly election verdict: Maharashtra to yield same results, Andhra CM

Haryana assembly election verdict: Maharashtra to yield same results, Andhra CM

Going by the assembly poll trends in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, the states of Maharashtra and Jharkhand will also yield the same results, Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) N Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday, according to PTI. Addressing a press conference after coming back from a two-day Delhi tour, Naidu showered praises on Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and also called for support for the idea of `one nation one elections` as frequent polls would hamper the developmental work. “Because of the decisions taken by the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government in Jammu Kashmir, not only has normalcy been restored, but also, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has emerged as the largest single party [in the polls in terms of vote share]. This is good. Narendra Modi has given the administration by blending development, welfare and good governance. It is yielding good results. If we observe these [poll] results, Maharashtra and Jharkhand would also yield the same result, I don`t have any doubt. I am confident that it will happen,” said Naidu. The saffron …

Reported By: Salil Tiwari Last Updated: February 15, 2024, 01:22 IST The Allahabad High Court. (File image/Shutterstock) The court acknowledged that legal restrictions exist against such adoptions, but emphasised that the child recognised the woman as her mother, and there was a reciprocal bond of love. The Allahabad High Court recently permitted a woman, who is a mother of four biological children, to adopt a girl child. The court acknowledged that legal restrictions exist against such adoptions, but emphasised that the child recognised the woman as her mother, and there was a reciprocal bond of love. Consequently, it ruled in favour of the child’s best interests, allowing the woman to officially adopt her. The bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Manjive Shukla said, “While the law could not prevent the petitioner from giving birth to another child, it has been relied to deprive the petitioner from bringing up another child as her own. To take away X from the petitioner is the easiest part in law but it is not possible for law to …
