Maharashtra’s Ladki Bahin Yojana: Waiting for ₹1,500

Radhika Kamble, 49, seethes with anger every time someone mentions the Ladki Bahin Yojana, Maharashtra’s welfare initiative targeted at women. She feels betrayed, because two years after the scheme’s announcement, she has not yet been able to become a beneficiary. For a widow taking care of the household, the process was too overwhelming and there was no help, she says. But that was not what left her feeling vulnerable. Within months of her husband dying, she was asked to take a photograph bereft of the mangalsutra, a symbol of marriage. “They told me that the officials should be able to easily identify women who really need the money. Married women don’t need it as much. We need it the most. The government will understand after looking at our photos, we were told,” she says. She chokes on her emotions. Sitting in a small, unventilated room in Sangamnagar, Mumbai, she goes through the documents and her photo again and again. Frustrated, she says, “Maybe money is not written into my fate.” Glitches and headaches The Maharashtra …

Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana: Computer teachers not to be deployed at enrolment camps

Days after the Punjab department of health and family welfare issued directions to deploy computer teachers along with other staff for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana enrolment camps, the district education officials have been instructed not to assign such duties to teachers. The Punjab government had launched the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana on January 22 to provide free cashless medical treatment of up to ₹10 lakh to every family in the state. (HT File Photo) The decision follows protests by teachers in Mansa. Teachers in other districts of Punjab also objected to the assigned duties and even submitted demand letters to the respective district administrations. Allegations had also surfaced regarding the use of school machinery, including computers and printers, for the camps despite the impending practical and final exams. The health department’s directions had come under intense scrutiny as teachers were assigned non-academic duties amid the state government’s promise to keep them focused on education. Confirming the development, Barnala district education officer (secondary) Suneetinder Singh said, “We received a call from the state education department directing …

CM Fadnavis responds to demand to rename Ladki Bahin Yojana after Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said his government will consider the demand to rename the Ladki Bahin scheme after Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash in Baramati.  Earlier on Tuesday, NCP MLC Amol Mitkari demanded that the government`s flagship Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana for financial assistance to women be renamed after Pawar. We will sit together and think how to go about it,” as cited by news agency PTI.  Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar and four others were killed in a plane crash at Baramati in Pune district on January 28. Politically attractive Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana is economically hollow: Tarun Chugh | Chandigarh News

3 min readLudhianaJan 29, 2026 08:59 AM IST Terming the AAP government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana (MMSBY) “misleading, impractical and entirely publicity-driven”, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday said the rigid package capping was the biggest and most fundamental failure of the scheme, exposing the Rs 10-lakh health coverage claim as “hollow” from the very beginning. “The central government’s scheme Ayushman Bharat provides genuine, pre-insured protection, but AAP’s MMSBY rests on hollow claims and weak foundations,” he said, addressing a press conference in Chandigarh. Chugh said, “The biggest lie of this Kejriwal-Mann scheme is the promise of Rs 10 lakh health security. The reality is that the scheme provides actual insurance of only Rs 1 lakh per family, while the remaining Rs 9 lakh is left to the mercy of the debt-ridden Punjab government. Where will this Rs 9 lakh come from when the state is already struggling financially?” Chugh said, “Kejriwal and his party are loudly advertising the false Rs 10-lakh claim, but they have imposed such harsh capping on even …
