South Korean prosecutors set to demand heavy sentence for Yoon| India News

South Korean prosecutors are expected to call on Tuesday for either life in prison or the death penalty for former president Yoon Suk Yeol, accused of leading an insurrection when he declared martial law over a year ago. South Korean prosecutors set to demand heavy sentence for Yoon Yoon triggered a political crisis when he announced an end to civilian rule in December 2024 and sent troops to parliament to enforce it. But his attempt failed and he became the country’s first sitting president to be taken into custody when he was detained last January. Yoon’s criminal trial for insurrection, abuse of power and other offences linked to the declaration draws to a close on Tuesday. Under South Korean law, prosecutors must ask the judge for a sentence of either death or life imprisonment for the crime of insurrection. Yoon’s defence team, meanwhile, have made theatrical arguments in a bid to help him and his alleged accomplices. On Tuesday they compared the disgraced former leader to great historic figures like Italian scholars Galileo Galilei and …

South Korea’s impeached president Yoon arrested over martial law declaration | World News

South Korea’s impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was formally arrested early Sunday after being apprehended at his presidential compound in Seoul last week, reported AP. He faces rebellion charges linked to his martial law declaration on December 3, which has been described as the country’s most serious political crisis since its democratisation in the late 1980s. The Seoul Western District Court approved an arrest warrant for Yoon following hours of deliberation, stating he posed a threat to destroy evidence. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, leading the investigation with police and military, can now extend his detention for 20 days before transferring the case to prosecutors for indictment. Chaos at the court Yoon’s appearance at the Seoul Western District Court led to chaotic scenes as thousands of his supporters gathered nearby, clashing with police. Authorities detained around 40 protesters, including 20 who climbed a fence attempting to approach the court. At least two vehicles carrying investigators were damaged. Yoon’s lawyers stated he spoke for about 40 minutes during the nearly five-hour closed-door hearing. They …

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Arrested Over Failed Martial Law Bid

Seoul: South Korean authorities on Wednesday arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over insurrection accusations related to his brief declaration of martial law on December 3, investigators said. He is the first sitting president in South Korea’s history to be arrested. According to reports, the suspended President was seen leaving his heavily fortified residence in central Seoul in a convoy to the offices of the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) after a joint team of investigators and police said they had executed the arrest warrant. Mr Yoon had been holed up at his hillside residence for weeks, behind a small army of personal security to avoid arrest. His lawyers have argued attempts to detain the impeached Presidnet were illegal and were designed to publicly humiliate him. On Wednesday morning, his lawyer announced that the president had agreed to speak to investigators and that he had decided to leave the residence to prevent a “serious incident”. “President Yoon has decided to personally appear at the Corruption Investigation Office today,” Seok Dong-hyeon said on Facebook, adding that Yoon …

Top aide of impeached South Korean president Yoon pleads for investigators to halt detention efforts | News Today News

The top aide of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol pleaded with law enforcement on Tuesday to abandon their efforts to detain him over last month’s martial law imposition, as authorities prepared a second attempt to take him into custody. In his statement, presidential chief of staff Chung Jin-suk said Yoon could instead be questioned at a “third site” or at his residence and claimed that the anti-corruption agency and police were trying to drag him out like he was a member of a “South American drug cartel.” However, Yoon Kab-keun, one of the president’s lawyers, said Chung issued the message without consulting them and that the legal team has no immediate plans to make the president available for questioning by investigators. Yoon Suk Yeol has not left his official residence in Seoul for weeks, and the presidential security service prevented dozens of investigators from detaining Yoon after a nearly six-hour standoff on Jan. 3. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials and police pledged more forceful measures to detain Yoon while they jointly investigate whether …

Image Source : AP South Korea’s anti-corruption agency asks police to detain impeached President Yoon. After failing in its attempts to detail the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea’s anti-corruption agency has requested the police to bring him into custody. Last week, the anti-corruption agency was involved in an hours-long standoff with the presidential security service.  The agency and police confirmed the discussion on Monday before the one-week warrant for Yoon’s detention expires. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, the agency overseeing Yoon’s case, is expected to request a new court warrant to extend the window for Yoon’s detention, the police say. Why was warrant issued against Yoon? After Yoon dodged several requests by investigators to appear for questioning, the Seoul Western District Court on December 31 issued a warrant to detain him.  The anti-corruption agency leads the joint investigation with military investigators and police. It has put rebellion charges against Yoon after he imposed martial law on December 3 and dispatched troops to surround the National Assembly.  Yoon’s presidential privilege Moreover, Yoon …

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Impeached Over Failed Martial Law Bid

South Korean lawmakers impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over martial law bid, suspending him from office after the declaration of martial law caused mass outrage and resulted in constitutional crisis. Lawmakers voted on a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, as a parliament livestream showed. 204 lawmakers in the 300-member house voted in favour of the motion, while 85 voted against.  Under the constitution, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will be the interim leader. It will now be decided by the Constitutional Court on whether to reinstate or remove him. This could take up to six months. On December 3rd, when the martial law was declared by President Yoon Suk Yeol, soldiers were sent to the National Assembly and the officer who led the soldiers said that they were ordered to forcibly remove lawmakers so they wouldn’t be able to reach the 150 votes they needed to overturn the law. Yoon had declared martial law accusing the opposition of paralysing the government. However, the declaration was voted down and the law rescinded within hours of its imposition. Last …

Troops Storm South Korea Parliament, MPs Defy Martial Law As Yoon Vows Crackdown On Pro-North Forces

South Korean forces stormed the Parliament after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an emergency martial law against “pro-North, anti-state forces” on Dec. 3. Yoon described the imposition of martial law as “inevitable to guarantee the continuity of a liberal South Korea.” This comes after Yoon’s approval rating dropped to 19% in the latest Gallup poll amid discontent over his handling of the economy and scandals involving his wife. Meanwhile, South Korea’s military proclaimed that parliament and other political gatherings that could cause “social confusion” would be suspended.
