Neeraj Chopra splits with Czech coach Jan Zelezny | Sport-others News

Two-time Olympic medal-winning javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra on Saturday announced an end to his partnership with Czech coach Jan Zelezny after just one season, which the Indian said was marked by “progress, respect, and a shared love for the sport.” Chopra did not specify the reason for ending the stint with Zelezny, a bonafide legend of the sport who holds the world record and under whose tutelage the Haryana-lad breached the 90m mark last year. Reflecting on their work, Chopra said to learn directly from an athlete he had admired since childhood was a dream come true and gave him a completely new “toolbox of exercises, technical ideas, and fresh perspectives”. “Working with Jan opened my eyes to so many new ideas. The way he thinks about technique, rhythm, and movement is incredible, and I learned a lot from every single session we had together,” Chopra said. “What I’m most proud about is the friendship I’ve built with someone who has been my idol all my life. Jan is not only the best javelin …

Neeraj Chopra part ways with coach Jan Železný

Neeraj Chopra part ways with coach Jan Železný

In a major development, two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra and his coach Jan Železný have mutually decided to part ways, bringing an end to their 14-month coaching relationship. Last week, Neeraj had ended his decade-long partnership with his management firm, JSW Sports and launched his own athlete management firm, Vel Sports. Under Železný, Neeraj achieved the elusive 90m-plus throw at the Doha Diamond League in May, registering a 90.23m throw to finish behind Germany’s Julian Weber. The two worked on a new technique that reduced Neeraj’s tendency to lean left at release and helped stabilise his stance. Despite achieving the 90m mark, Neeraj struggled for consistency and failed to make the podium for the first time in seven years when he finished eighth at the World Athletics Championships 2025. As he switched between exuding charm and showcasing diplomacy — drawing chuckles as he sheepishly narrated his awkwardness on ad-shoot sets and deftly handling the Arshad Nadeem bouncer hurled at him — only one thing Neeraj Chopra declared mattered: that, for the first time in months, he was fully fit. “(Earlier) I had some problems in my groin,” Chopra said in Doha ahead of the Diamond League curtain-raiser for men’s javelin throw. “This time, I never missed any (throwing) session. So, I feel very confident.” To understand how big a deal this — not missing a throwing session — is for Chopra, it is important to go nine months back in time. Moments after winning the Paris Olympics silver medal last August, he was concerned that the persisting groin injury did not allow him to explore his full range. “I haven’t been able to throw from the full runway. Maximum athletes will have 40-50 throws in one session. With me, who knows, maybe in two or three weeks, I’ll have one session. I have the …

Before he answered that, he opted to open up on his previous coach Bartonietz, with whom he had claimed the Tokyo Olympics gold and the Paris Olympics silver medals besides winning a gold and a silver at the World Athletics Championships.
