Aamir Khan calls Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar the most “torturous” film of his career, revealing how they had to shoot the film twice and replace several actors.

Aamir Khan reveals Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was the most “torturous” film he shot, reshooting 80% of the film and replacing ‘badtameez’ actors.

In a career spanning over four decades, Aamir Khan has delivered some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters and cult favorites. But despite the acclaim and success, not every film journey has been smooth for the superstar. Recently, in a candid chat with Too Filmy, Aamir opened up about one of the toughest experiences he’s had on set—Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. The actor called it the most “torturous” film he’s ever worked on.

Sharing why, Aamir revealed, “Bohot torture hua. Voh film do dafa bani” (It was a huge torture. That film was made twice). He explained that after shooting the film initially in scenic locations like Kodai and Ooty over a span of 60-70 days, director Mansoor Khan realized something wasn’t working. “Pehli dafa jab bani, we shot in Kodai and Ooty. We shot for 60-70 days. Shoot ended, and I was shooting for another film. Mansoor then called me two months later and said, ‘There is a problem, Devika ka character work nahi ho raha hai’.”

At the time, the role of Devika wasn’t played by Pooja Bedi. “Us waqt Devika ka character koi aur play kar raha tha, Pooja Bedi nahi thi. Mansoor ne khud accept kiya ki galti unki thi, galat casting ho gayi thi. Jo actress cast ki thi, voh bohot achi insaan thi, but film ko jo chhoti si snobbish ladki chahiye thi, voh feel nahi aa raha tha. So he said that we would have to shoot all the scenes again.”

According to Aamir, about 40% of the film involved scenes between him and Devika’s character, another 40% with Ayesha Jhulka, and the rest with supporting cast members. He recalled, “Aakhri 20% jo film ka tha, usme 4 actors the—main unka naam nahi loonga—par woh bohot badtameez the. Humein bohot takleef de rahe the. Maine Mansoor se bola, ‘Agar hum 80% film dobara bana rahe hain, to yeh 20% bhi kar lete hain’. To humne puri film dobara shoot ki. Pura cast badal gaya, sirf main, meri bicycle aur Mamik nahi badle. Bohot takleef hui film banane mein.”

Despite these hurdles, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar released in 1992 and became a huge success. Directed by Mansoor Khan, the film starred Aamir alongside Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Mamik Singh, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Over the years, it has grown into a cult classic, remembered for its gripping storyline and memorable performances.

Up next, Aamir is all set to return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, following the underwhelming performance of Laal Singh Chaddha. Also starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film is described as a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par. Speaking about it with Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir shared, “Well, it’s a beautiful story. Actually, the easiest way I can describe it is that Taare Zameen Par is a very emotional film that makes you cry, whereas Sitaare Zameen Par makes you laugh. It’s a humorous film. The theme is similar—of people with different abilities, different intelligence, or different challenges—but this time, it leans more towards humour rather than emotions.”

Fans are now eagerly awaiting his comeback, as Aamir promises a lighter, feel-good narrative after his previous emotionally intense performances.
