When Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par was released theatrically last year, the actor said that the film would not be released on OTT platforms. Rather, he announced his plans of releasing it on YouTube on a pay-per-view model. However, now it seems that the actor has reconsidered his decision to skip an OTT release.

It was recently announced that Sitaare Zameen Par will be released on Sony Liv, eight months after its theatrical release. The social media handle of Khan’s production house and Sony Liv’s Instagram page made a joint announcement.

The streaming platform also released a statement saying, “The release marks a special milestone for the platform, as Sitaare Zameen Par becomes the platform’s first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on the service.” However, the release date has not been announced yet.

Explaining the YouTube pay-per-view model, Aamir Khan said in one of his earlier interviews, “We are able to reach only 2-3 per cent of our population in the theatrical business, even for the biggest hits. For a film like Sitaare Zameen Par, about one crore people would have watched it in theatres. Without enough theatres being built, this model is perhaps the only way to reach the majority of India.

He also said, “Cinemas came first, then theatres came to serve the cinema. Earlier, there was no theatre; they would put up a screen and show films through a projector. Then tents came, and later permanent theatres. Cinema is what I am protecting, and emotionally, I am very tied to theatres. The theatrical experience cannot be replaced by anything else.

Directed by RS Prasanna, the film follows Gulshan Arora (Aamir Khan), a hot-headed basketball coach who trains a team of adults with special abilities, turning punishment into a journey of acceptance and growth. Sitaare Zameen Par also stars Genelia D’Souza.
