British actor Anthony Head, renowned for his performances in television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, Merlin, and Little Britain, has passed away at the age of 72.
Head gained worldwide recognition as Rupert Giles in the popular supernatural teen drama Buffy during the late 1990s.
He later took on a recurring role in the sketch comedy series Little Britain, portrayed King Uther Pendragon in the BBC’s Merlin, and featured as former football club owner Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso.
How did Anthony Head die?
“He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” his daughters Emily and Daisy stated in a statement, as per BBC.
His daughters issued a statement expressing, “it is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father”.
“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many,” they continued.
Additionally, they conveyed their awareness of how deeply he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and admirers of the show in which he participated,” noting that he “loved his job very much” and “always considered himself incredibly lucky”.
His family recognized that “his legacy will will live on” and expressed that they felt “lucky” to have witnessed him pursuing his passion throughout his professional journey.
Anthony Head’s career
Head’s other notable works included The Iron Lady, Doctor Who, Persuasion, The Inbetweeners, and Manchild.
Head initially gained recognition in the UK during the 1980s as the prominent figure in Nescafe coffee advertisements on television.
He was part of the Gold Blend couple alongside Sharon Maughan, with their coffee-themed romantic advertisements achieving popularity from 1987 to 1993.
Throughout his career, Head featured in numerous well-known British television series, including Motherland, Silent Witness, and Doctor Who.
His final acting credits included an appearance in Bridgerton in 2022, where he was featured in one episode of the second series.
In 2018, he also became a member of the cast of BBC Radio 4’s enduring drama The Archers, portraying the character Robin Fairbrother.
He had a lengthy career in theater, performing in various productions of The Rocky Horror Show and musicals such as Godspell and Chess.
Anthony Head’s family
Head experienced the loss of his long-term partner Sarah Fisher, an advocate for animal welfare, in December 2025 at the age of 61.
His daughters, Emily, 37, and Daisy, 35, are both involved in acting, with Emily being particularly recognized for her role as Carli D’Amato in The Inbetweeners.
Daisy has made appearances in television series such as Harlots and Shadow and Bone.
His brother Murray is also an actor, known for his role in the Oscar-nominated film Sunday Bloody Sunday from 1971 and the musical Chess.
