In a statement, it was announced that the Gates Foundation will instead be represented by Ankur Vora, President of the Africa and India Offices, who is set to speak later today at the summit.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’ participation in the AI summit became a subject of speculation on Tuesday amid conflicting reports. Government sources had initially indicated that he would not attend, but a spokesperson for the Gates Foundation later said he was indeed participating.
Gates had been listed among global tech leaders, policymakers, founders and innovators on the official website of the AI Impact Summit, which began in the national capital on February 16.
However, his name briefly disappeared from the key participants’ list on Wednesday morning, triggering confusion.
Gates was scheduled to deliver a keynote address today, with a 12-minute speaking slot at 11:50 am at Bharat Mandapam, where several global leaders and industry heads are expected to participate.
Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is leading the AI summit, did not give a direct response when asked about Gates’ participation during a scheduled press conference.
