The 2025 Cannes Film Festival has officially kicked off, and while no Indian films are part of the main competition, Indian celebrities are still making their presence felt at the prestigious event. From red carpet veterans to first-timers, here’s a look at the Indian stars set to attend this year’s festival.
1. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
A Cannes mainstay for over two decades, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will once again grace the festival red carpet. As a L’Oréal Paris ambassador, Aishwarya has become synonymous with glamour at Cannes. Her extravagant gowns and iconic beauty looks are among the most anticipated elements each year, and 2025 is expected to be no different.
2. Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt was slated to make her Cannes debut this year, following her stunning Met Gala appearance last year in a Sabyasachi sari. She is also the first Indian global ambassador for Gucci. However, there are unconfirmed reports suggesting that she might postpone her appearance due to escalating tensions at the India-Pakistan border. Fans are still hopeful for a surprise last-minute arrival.
3. Simi Garewal
Marking her long-awaited red carpet debut, Simi Garewal will walk at Cannes 2025 on May 19. She will attend the screening of the restored 1970 Satyajit Ray classic Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest), in which she starred. The film, restored in 4K, will be showcased in the Cannes Classics section.
4. Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter
The lead stars of Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter will attend the world premiere of the film in the Un Certain Regard section. Their red carpet appearance will celebrate this significant moment for Indian independent cinema on a global stage.
5. Karan Johar
Karan Johar, whose Dharma Productions has co-produced Homebound, is expected to be at Cannes this year. Sharing his excitement, Karan said, “This achievement is not just a win for our film industry, but a beacon of hope for emerging filmmakers…”
6. Sharmila Tagore
Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore returns to Cannes for the screening of Aranyer Din Ratri. She previously served on the main jury in 2009. Her presence this year will mark the global celebration of Satyajit Ray’s cinematic legacy.
7. Payal Kapadia
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia, who won hearts with A Night of Knowing Nothing, has been selected as a jury member in the main competition. She joins an elite panel led by Juliette Binoche and including Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong.
8. Nitanshi Goel
Young sensation Nitanshi Goel, who impressed audiences with Laapataa Ladies, will make her Cannes debut this year. At just 16, she became the youngest actress to win a Best Actress award for her role and will now be the youngest Indian actress on the Cannes red carpet.
9. Shalini Passi
Art collector and actor Shalini Passi will walk the red carpet alongside renowned artist Paresh Maity for Longitude 77. Their appearance celebrates the collaboration between Indian contemporary art and global cinema at the festival.
