Security forces in Chhattisgarh Saturday detected a heavy improvised explosive device (IED) weighing nearly 50 kg in Bijapur – the state’s most Maoist-affected district.
The incident took place on the Basaguda-Awapalli road, which falls under jurisdiction of the Basaguda police station. A battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) detected the IED under a concrete bridge during demining operations, prompting the force’s bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) team to defuse it.
According to Bijapur’s Additional Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Governa, Maoists had hidden a command IED – a device that can be manually triggered from 100-200 metres away – behind a concrete block and some stones.
The discovery comes within a month of eight security personnel and a civilian driver being killed when a command IED ripped through their vehicle on January 6. (Express Photo)
“We tried to remove the IED but it was placed deep inside. So, we decided to detonate it,” he said, adding that the explosion caused a crater on the road.
The discovery comes within a month of eight security personnel and a civilian driver being killed when a command IED ripped through their vehicle on January 6. The security personnel were returning to Bijapur after an encounter in Abujhmad, where five Maoists were killed.
According to security forces, six jawans have been wounded so far in IED explosions. A total of 20 IEDs have been defused this year, according to estimates.
