The rain across Delhi-NCR is set to bring the temperature down again over the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department.
According to the weather office, night temperatures may drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius across the plains of northwest India as cold winds move in after the season’s first major snowfall in the region.
“There is likely to be a fall in minimum temperatures by 3-5°C over the plains of northwest India, including Delhi, during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its bulletin.
Snowfall Across Hills, Rain In Plains
Several places across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh witnessed light to moderate rain and heavy snowfall on Friday. Isolated snowfall was also recorded in parts of Uttarakhand, with some areas seeing snow for the first time this winter.
Shimla, Manali, Keylong, Kufri, Bharmaur, Gulmarg, Kupwara, Pahalgam, Kukernag, Qazigund and Banihal, among other locations, also reported snowfall between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Dry Winter Sees Some Relief
Northwest India has been facing an unusually dry winter so far. December saw a rainfall deficit of nearly 85 per cent, while the first 10 days of January recorded an 84 per cent shortfall. This lack of rain and snow had left many hill regions without their usual winter cover.
The IMD said the current spell of snowfall is expected to help reduce the rainfall deficit to some extent.
Weather conditions are likely to improve from Saturday. However, the IMD has warned that another strong western disturbance may affect northwest India between January 26 and 28. This system could bring isolated heavy rain and snowfall to the western Himalayan region, especially on January 27.
Temperature Trends Across Regions
Minimum temperatures dropped to between 1°C and 4°C at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Many parts of Uttar Pradesh recorded night temperatures between 5°C and 9°C. Cold conditions were also noted in parts of Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Meghalaya.
Most other regions recorded minimum temperatures of 10°C or above, while higher Himalayan areas remained below freezing.
The IMD said there will be no major change in minimum temperatures over northwest India for two days after the initial dip.
This will be followed by a gradual rise of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
Central India may see a slight drop over the coming days before temperatures rise again, while Maharashtra could experience a fall of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours.
