New CCTV footage has emerged showing the intensity of Monday evening’s deadly blast near Delhi’s historic Red Fort, which has so far claimed 12 lives.
The video captures a crowded jewellery market near the Red Fort, with shoppers browsing stalls and moving through narrow alleys just moments before panic erupts.
While the explosion itself is not directly visible, the footage shows the ground trembling, sending people running for cover. Many are seen rushing into shops and taking shelter as chaos spreads.
The blast occurred in a slow-moving Hyundai i20 at a traffic signal near the Red Fort metro station. Officials confirmed that 12 people have died and more than 20 others remain hospitalised.
Several vehicles were destroyed in the explosion. Initial reports had placed the death toll at eight, which later rose after three more victims succumbed to injuries.
The incident triggered a swift security response. Teams from the Special Cell, Crime Branch, and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were deployed, the area was sealed, and visitors evacuated.
Traffic on Netaji Subhash Marg and surrounding roads was diverted for several hours, while sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads conducted thorough checks.
Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have taken over the probe, with the Ministry of Home Affairs designating the blast as a potential act of terror. The NIA will examine all aspects of the case, including the materials used in the blast and possible terror links.
A joint team of the NIA and FSL revisited the site on Tuesday morning to collect additional forensic evidence. Officials emphasised that all leads are being pursued aggressively, and security has been tightened across Delhi and other states.
