Govinda reveals why he was late on sets.

Govinda may be one of India’s top actors, but he’s also famous for being late on set, which some say hurt his career in the 2000s. Recently, he explained why he struggled with punctuality. In an interview with Mukesh Khanna on his YouTube channel Bheeshm International, Govinda said he saw himself as a disciple of the legendary Dilip Kumar and wouldn’t come to set until he felt “tuned in.”

He said that he didn’t believe in being late and always made sure his rhythm was right. He compared it to classical musicians who tune themselves before performing. “Dilip sahab ka chela tha main. Late-vate mein mera vishwas nahi hai. Main apne sur-taal mila ke jata tha. Aapne kabhi classical gaane ka program dikha hai? Sur-taal mila ke tuning karte the. Jab tak mere sur-taal sahi na ho jaye, main set par pahuchta hi nahi tha. Aaj tak dhokha hi nahi dia maine.”

He said he had about 40 films going at once. He talked about jumping from one film set to another and feeling lost as an uneducated person in the industry. “Yahan se wahan jau, wahan se wahan jau. Wo bhi main unpadh insan main film line ke hath lag gaya na main. Agar Dilip saab nahi mile hote toh maar dia hote mujhe. Pachees filmein chhudwayi. Main tha ki, ‘Sir, itni filmon chhudwayi toh paise lautane padenge’ (laughs). ‘Kahin se dilwa deta hu main tujhe, tu chhod de. Meri gal maanega na tu?’ Maine kaha, ‘Theek hai, chhodta hu main (Go from here to there, then from there to somewhere else. I ended up in the film industry as an uneducated person. If I hadn’t met Dilip Saab, I would have been lost. He made me leave 25 films. I said, ‘Sir, if I leave so many films, I’ll have to return the money’ (laughs). He said, ‘I’ll get you money from somewhere else; just leave those films. You’ll listen to me, right?’ I replied, ‘Okay, I’ll leave them).”

Govinda and Dilip Kumar acted together in the 1990 film Izzatdaar, directed by K Bapaiah, which also starred Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, and Asrani. Dilip Kumar died in 2021 at the age of 98.
