Haryana witnessed frenzied action over a number plate last month. Stealing the spotlight was the registration ‘HR88B8888’. It fetched a jaw-dropping price of Rs 1.17 crore during the state’s weekly online auction for VIP numbers. The winning bidder, Sudhir Kumar, set a new national record and made headlines for the unconventional decision. But the twist in the story came when he couldn’t finish the paperwork required to seal the deal. As a result, the number had to be re-auctioned.
Now, skipping the mandatory formalities has come with a bigger and unexpected trouble for Sudhir Kumar, Director of transportation service Romulus Solutions Private Limited. The Haryana government has decided to investigate his assets and income, as per the orders by Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij.
What Haryana Minister Anil Vij Said
Anil Vij, in a conversation with the media, revealed, “We offer VIP number plates via auction. Several people bid for the number ‘8888’. However, after winning the auction by placing the highest bid, the bidder (Sudhir Kumar) did not pay the amount. Instead, he let his security deposit of Rs 11,000 be forfeited”, reported NDTV. The authorities would be probing whether the bidder has a net worth of Rs 1.17 crore.
The minister added that he would be requesting the Income Tax Department to look into the matter. According to him, this move is aimed at preventing bidders from increasing the cost of a number plate without financial capability.
When Was The Payment Deadline?
The deadline to pay the amount was on December 1. Previously, Sudhir Kumar shared that he couldn’t deposit the bid amount due to a technical glitch, despite making two attempts. Additionally, the bidder claimed that his family forbade him from splurging such a large amount on a number plate.
“Discussions are currently underway with the family. Elderly people in the family think that it is not a wise decision to spend such a large amount on a number plate, while my opinion is in favour of it,” he said back then.
The HR88B8888 number plate stands out from the crowd for several reasons. The HR indicates Haryana, ‘88’ stands for the district or RTO code, ‘B’ refers to the vehicle series and ‘8888’ is the distinctive numeric sequence.
