Radhikka Madan talks about portraying Shyama in Subedaar, describing the character as emotionally broken despite her fierce strength.

‘Her Strength Is A Facade’: Radhikka Madan Opens Up About Shyama In Subedaar
Actress Radhikka Madan has opened up about the emotional complexity of her character Shyama in the action drama Subedaar, revealing that it was the vulnerability beneath the character’s tough exterior that convinced her to join the project almost instantly.
Radhikka Madan On Saying Yes To Subedaar During Narration
In the film, Shyama is the daughter of Subedaar Arjun Maurya, played by Anil Kapoor. While Arjun Maurya is portrayed as a commanding and formidable figure, Shyama emerges as an equally powerful presence, matching her father’s intensity with a fierce spirit of her own.
Recalling how she agreed to the film during the narration itself, Radhikka said the emotional depth of the story immediately resonated with her.
“This is the first film, jahan par maine narration mein hi, I said yes. (This is the first film where I have said yes during narration.) Subedaar was one thing that was being offered to me for a long time. When Suresh Sir narrated it to me, in the narration only, I said yes,” she shared.
She added that while she had previously been offered roles that focused primarily on physical strength or action, Shyama stood out because of the emotional fragility hidden beneath her tough exterior.
“The way he narrated it, the soul of the story is something that really pulled me. People have offered me characters which are physically strong… jo bahar se bohot strong dikhti hai (which look very strong from outside), but I think the core of Shyama is so vulnerable. She is so soft inside. That layer really excited me because she’s so broken. Everything else is a facade,” she said.
The Vulnerability Behind Shyama’s Strength
According to Radhikka, Shyama’s strength is deeply rooted in her instinct to survive rather than genuine emotional resilience.
“Her strength is a facade. Her survival is a facade. There’s a reason why she’s not soft in the world because her survival instinct is really, really high. She doesn’t feel safe anywhere. And she keeps running from things. So I think those layers really excited me and made me say yes to the character,” she explained.
The actress also highlighted the emotional conflict that defines Shyama’s personality and her complicated relationship with her father.
“She really wants to be like her mother. And she doesn’t like her father, but she’s actually her father,” she said.
