Hilary Duff opens up about tossing husband Matthew Koma’s phone in a bush during a rare explosive fight amid LA fire stress.

Hilary Duff reflects on a rare fight with husband Matthew Koma.
Hilary Duff is candidly reflecting on a moment in her marriage that she now looks back on with a mix of humor and honesty. In a conversation with Dakota Fanning for Interview Magazine, published February 23, the singer-actress opened up about her relationship with husband Matthew Koma. While the couple—married for six years—rarely clash, Duff admitted they tend to have “one drag-out fight” each year.
“He actually brought it up the other day,” she shared. “He was like, ‘We haven’t had a fight in such a long time.’ I’m like, ‘Are you ready?’”
But when that long-brewing argument finally arrived, Duff confessed she may not have handled it with complete composure. Recalling the heated moment, she revealed she “threw his phone in a Bougainvillea bush,” adding with surprising candor, “It felt so good.”
The argument unfolded during a particularly overwhelming chapter for their family. Duff and Koma, who share daughters Banks, Mae and Townes, were navigating the emotional toll of being displaced from their home during the 2025 Los Angeles fires. Duff is also mom to son Luca, whom she shares with former NHL player Mike Comrie.
Amid the upheaval, tensions ran high. “We just needed to have it out,” Duff admitted, emphasizing that explosive fights are not the norm in their relationship. “But we don’t usually fight.”
The rare blow-up, she suggested, was less about deep-rooted issues and more about the stress of circumstances that had pushed both of them to their limits.
A Creative And Personal Partnership
Despite that dramatic moment, Duff spoke warmly about the strength of their partnership—both at home and in the studio. Koma recently stepped in as producer for her latest album, Luck… or Something, marking a new chapter in their creative collaboration.
For Duff, having her husband involved in the project brought a sense of emotional security. “It sounds so cheesy to say, but waking up every day and taking on the things in our world—we’re such a unit,” she said. Reflecting on her early years in the entertainment industry, she added, “Growing up in the industry, I felt like a lone rider for such a long time.”
“That’s such a dorky word,” she continued, “but I was like, ‘I’m tough. I’ve got this.’ It took me a really long time to accept how much he could take off of my plate.”
She also praised Koma’s creative instincts, calling him “insanely talented,” and explained why she wanted the album to be a two-person endeavor. “I was like, ‘It has to just be me and you,’” she said. “The most honest stuff came from that because he has a front row to my life and everything I’ve experienced—the really difficult times and the really easy good times that made me who I am.”
