Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday thanked his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi’s hospitality and said this is not simply a renewal of ties but a partnership between two confident countries.
Carney said there has been more engagement than ever before between India and Canada in the last one year, in a reference to an improvement in relations between the two sides since he took over from his predecessor Justin Trudeau.
“Our FMs met five times. Lot of engagements between Canadian and Indian governments in last year than ever before. This is not only renewal of relationship but a partnership between two confident countries,” Carney said.
His comments came after he held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi during his four-day visit to India. The meeting took place at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two countries. During the discussion, both leaders reviewed the progress achieved across diverse areas of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership.
Carney, who arrived in India on February 27 for an official visit at Modi’s invitation, has made special efforts to rebuild India-Canada ties after they collapsed in 2023 due to Trudeau’s public allegations of Indian government agents being involved in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. While India had rejected the charge as absurd and politically motivated, relations between the two countries plummeted with diplomats expelled and high commissioners recalled on both sides.
For two countries, who had historically been on good terms, the diplomatic crisis was intense and, for a while, looked like beyond repair. But Carney was instrumental in the swift turnaround when he replaced Trudeau in early 2025.
Modi immediately rang to congratulate him, while he quickly invited the Prime Minister to the G7 summit in Kananaskis in June last year. Then came the reappointment of high commissioners in September last year, followed by a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G20 in Johannesburg, where they formally agreed to launch negotiations for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA).
