Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Monday said the Centre has ordered a probe into the massive crisis across major airports in India due to large-scale flight cancellations by IndiGo.
Naidu pointed out that the operational issues stemmed entirely from IndiGo’s rostering system and the inquiry into the matter will be “an example not just for them but for all in the aviation sector”.
“This was an operational issue created by IndiGo…we were continuously in touch…on November 1, too, the ministry had a meeting…IndiGo sought some clarification and it was given…they failed to maintain their roster,” Naidu told the Rajya Sabha during Parliament’s ongoing winter session, explaining the timeline of events.
‘REGRET THE INCONVENIENCE’
Naidu apologised for the widespread disruptions caused by the flight cancellations, acknowledging the financial and emotional toll on travellers.
“I regret the inconvenience and cost to all the members and all the public who travelled,” he said, adding that 5.86 lakh passengers had been affected and Rs 5.6 crore had been returned to customers.
Reiterating that the central government is prioritising the matter, he added: “We are not taking this issue lightly. We have ordered an inquiry, and we will make this an example for other airlines to follow. Exemplary action will follow.”
IndiGo had cancelled hundreds of flights over the past week, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across major airports and prompting the Centre to impose a cap of flight fares for the time being.
‘TIME TO START NEW AIRLINE’
Naidu used the opportunity to call for greater competition in India’s civil aviation sector. “This is the time to start a new airline in India,” he said. “We are going to engage with stakeholders to encourage competition.”
He said while the ministry of civil aviation responded promptly, the operational collapse lay squarely with IndiGo. The probe will scrutinise IndiGo’s rostering practices and its adherence to regulatory directives, he said, adding that the government will provide daily updates on the status of India’s foremost airline.
