Jason Momoa trades Aquaman for antihero Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.
Jason Momoa became a household name after playing Aquaman.
Jason Momoa is diving back into the DC universe, but this time, he’s leaving Aquaman behind. The actor has officially signed on to play the infamous antihero Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, marking his first role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe.
The film, starring House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, is set to follow Superman: Legacy as the second entry in the new DC cinematic lineup. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will debut as Superman and Lois Lane in the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), Supergirl will also feature Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle. Ana Nogueira penned the screenplay, adapting Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s acclaimed comic book series of the same name.
Momoa confirmed the news on Instagram, referencing a past interview with Fandango. The actor, a self-proclaimed fan of the character, shared his excitement: “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but [Lobo] was always my favourite. I always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’” He added, “If they ever call me to audition or play him, it’s a f*** yeah.”
Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated to begin on January 13, with a theatrical release scheduled for June 26, 2026. While plot specifics remain under wraps, James Gunn teased a darker and more intense take on Supergirl.
“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,” Gunn explained last year while previewing the new DC Universe’s slate of films and TV shows.
Momoa’s casting as Lobo signals a bold new direction for DC, bringing one of the most irreverent and violent characters to life in what promises to be an action-packed and emotionally charged tale of survival and heroism.
