Kate Winslet is reportedly in talks to star in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, joining Andy Serkis in the upcoming Middle-earth adventure set for 2027.

Kate Winslet could soon be heading to Middle-earth. The Oscar-winning actress is reportedly in discussions to join the cast of Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming film set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy universe.

The project will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his iconic role as Gollum, the tormented creature first introduced in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy. While Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the casting lineup, industry chatter suggests that familiar faces from the franchise may return. Elijah Wood is rumored to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins, while Ian McKellen could once again step into the robes of Gandalf.

If finalised, the project would mark Winslet’s first appearance in the long-running fantasy franchise, expanding the ensemble of characters within Tolkien’s cinematic world. The actress was recently seen in Avatar: Fire and Ash, continuing her collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron following her role in Avatar: The Way of Water.

A Reunion With Peter Jackson

The film will also reunite Winslet with director-producer Peter Jackson, who famously cast her in the 1994 drama Heavenly Creatures. Jackson is producing The Hunt for Gollum alongside longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the trio will remain closely involved throughout the project’s development.

Though official plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to take place between the events of The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring. The story will reportedly explore the hunt for Gollum during the period when the creature held crucial knowledge about the One Ring, potentially expanding on a storyline only briefly referenced in Tolkien’s lore.

The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. The film arrives as Warner Bros. continues to invest in the enduring popularity of the Lord of the Rings franchise. Both the original trilogy and its prequel series The Hobbit were massive global successes, with each trilogy earning roughly $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. itself is undergoing major corporate developments, as the studio is in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance. However, given the cultural and financial importance of the Lord of the Rings franchise, industry observers believe the potential merger is unlikely to disrupt the production plans for The Hunt for Gollum.
