The controversy related to the South Korean actor Kim Soo Hyun continued to intensify as his agency, Gold Medalist, is yet again taking a firm legal stand against Garosero Research Institute. After filing their first criminal suit against the operator of the YouTube channel on March 20, where the agency accused the controversial outlet of violating South Korea’s Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. The move came in response to the unauthorised distribution of explicit photos of Soo Hyun, which reportedly exposed his lower body.
The situation took a turn when Garosero Research Institute defiantly doubled down on its actions. On March 21, just a day after the criminal suit was filed, the outlet once again broadcasted the same explicit image of the actor during a livestream on YouTube. Additionally, they also threatened Disney+ with regard to the actor’s new K-drama Knock Off.
“On the very next day after we filed the complaint, March 21, Garo Sero Research Institute once again posted the same photos during a live broadcast on their YouTube channel. This behaviour by them constitutes another criminal act and shows blatant disregard for the law and investigative authorities. It is an unimaginable act,” Gold Medalist stated, as quoted by Koreaboo.
The agency continued, “During the live broadcasts on March 21 and 22, they also mentioned Disney+’s original drama Knock Off, in which actor Kim Soo Hyun appears, and threatened that if Disney+ does not cancel the release of Knock Off, they would release a video featuring Kim Soo Hyun.”
Their statement did not end there. Gold Medalist also accused the outlet of disseminating damaging and false claims regarding their artist, including irresponsibly linking him to the notorious Nth Room case– one of South Korea’s most horrifying criminal cases involving blackmail, cybersex trafficking, and the spread of sexually exploitative videos through the Telegram app between 2018 and 2020.
Gold Medalist denied such claims, saying, “Garo Sero Research Institute made insinuations that sounded as if actor Kim Soo Hyun had committed a crime similar to the Nth Room case and claimed there is a video recording of it. Like all of their previous claims, this is completely false, and of course, no such video exists. Their actions are serious criminal offences that cannot be overlooked, and we have swiftly taken additional legal action against them.”
Apart from the outlet, Kim Soo Hyun’s agency has also taken legal action against the late actress Kim Sae Ron’s family for allegedly leaking private photos of the Queen of Tears actor. Gold Medalist mentioned that the unauthorised release of such pictures has caused Soo Hyun “extreme emotional and reputational damage”.
