Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s love story remains one of the most iconic unions of Bollywood and cricket. The couple, who tied the knot on December 27, 1968, enjoyed 43 years of marriage until Mansoor’s death in 2011. While Sharmila is celebrated as a legendary actress, Mansoor, fondly called “Tiger Pataudi,” was India’s youngest Test cricket captain, achieving the title at just 21 years and 77 days. The couple had three children—Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Saba Pataudi.

In an old interview with Simi Garewal, Mansoor candidly admitted to not being a fan of films, even after meeting Sharmila. When Simi asked him what the name “Sharmila Tagore” meant to him before their relationship, Mansoor bluntly said, “Nothing.” Sharmila chimed in, “He knew only Vyjayanthimala and Meena Kumari.”

Recalling an amusing anecdote, Sharmila said, “Even after we met and were going around together… we went to see Mere Hamdam Mere Dost and he walked out of it.” Mansoor explained his stance: “I wasn’t fond of films. I still am not. I don’t enjoy them anymore.” However, Sharmila lightheartedly added, “But he sees all of Saif’s films now.”

Despite his indifference to cinema, Sharmila revealed her love for cricket. “I’ve been very fond of cricket, without understanding very much about it. But I was an ML Jaisimha fan,” she admitted.

The actress also reflected on her relationship with her mother-in-law, Nawab Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal. Recalling their first meeting, Sharmila said, “The first time I met Amma, I was, of course, very nervous. She asked, ‘What do you think about my son?’ I said, ‘I like him.’ She then asked, ‘What do you intend to do?’ I replied, ‘I don’t know yet; I just met him. I am very fond of him, and at this point, you have known him for longer.’”

Over the years, Sharmila and Sajida Sultan developed a strong bond. “We shared a very healthy mutual respect for each other,” Sharmila said.
