Shahid Kapoor’s latest theatrical outing O Romeo has made a steady start at the box office, registering a stronger opening than several of his recent films. The Vishal Bhardwaj directorial, co-starring Triptii Dimri, released across India on Friday and recorded promising early numbers despite modest occupancy levels, signalling encouraging audience interest.
Solid Day 1 Collection Beats Shahid’s Recent Releases
According to figures reported by Sacnilk.com, O Romeo collected an estimated ₹8.25 crore nett in India on its first day. The film was screened in 4,747 shows nationwide and logged an average occupancy of 11.74 per cent. Earlier estimates suggested the opening would hover around ₹7 crore, but late-night tallies pushed the total higher.
The film’s debut comfortably surpassed the day-one figures of Shahid Kapoor’s recent titles. His 2025 release Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrews, opened at ₹5.50 crore, while 2024’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya had collected ₹6.70 crore on day one. His sports drama Jersey (2022) debuted with ₹3.2 crore. The comparative performance positions O Romeo as Kapoor’s strongest opening in recent years and sets the stage for potential weekend growth depending on word-of-mouth.
Crime Drama Earns Critical Praise, Ensemble Draws Attention
Critical response has also aided early buzz. News18 Showsha rated the film 4/5, noting, “O’Romeo reunites Vishal Bhardwaj with Shahid Kapoor- a lethal combination that has proved its mettle time and again. This film is no exception. The film commands your attention right from the start. Vishal Bhardwaj takes his time to build Ustara’s world, and Shahid Kapoor does justice to his vision. This is Shahid Kapoor in top form. Shahid’s Ustara is layered with danger, humour, charm and wit. But there are often reminders that, before all the sharp dialogue and bravado, he is a criminal. Shahid, who is no stranger to the genre, essays this role with blade-sharp conviction. He commands attention on screen and is an obvious delight to watch in the dance sequences.”
Beyond Kapoor and Dimri, the film features an ensemble cast including Vikrant Massey, Tamannaah Bhatia, Avinash Tiwary, Disha Patani, Farida Jalal and Nana Patekar. Backed by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the story explores a turbulent emotional arc driven by love, loss and irreversible choices. Drawing inspiration from a chapter in Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, it follows gangster Hussain Ustara and his conflicted journey shaped by passion and violence.
