Media icon Oprah Winfrey was visibly emotional on Monday after watching her best friend of over five decades, CBS Mornings anchor Gayle King, conquer her fear of flying to join Blue Origin’s historic all-women spaceflight. The touching moment marked a significant personal triumph for Gayle, and Oprah shared how her friend’s journey on the all-female crew was even more impactful than going to space itself. Oprah’s heartfelt reaction highlighted the profound emotional significance of Gayle’s accomplishment.

Despite being visibly nervous ahead of the launch, Gayle King bravely took part in the 11-minute historic space journey, and this impressed her best friend Oprah Winfrey, calling the journey “cathartic”. The Colour Purple star was moved to tears watching her best friend excelling the same, and shared, “This is bigger than going to space for her,” adding, “She’s overcoming a wall of fear, a barrier.”

Winfrey also talked about King’s deep fear of flying but mentioned how this never became a hindrance in her path of excelling the panics during turbulence. “It’s about fulfilling something within,” said Oprah, further mentioning, “There’s only one first time all the women go up together. To be a pioneer is great.”

Just moments before the takeoff, Winfrey had a few moments of encouragement for King. She clamingly told her, “Peace be still. Hold to God’s unchanging hand. He’s got your back.”

After the journey ended, King talked about her experience, mentioning, “It’s oddly quiet when you get up there,” adding, “You look down and think, ‘That’s where we came from?’ It’s a reminder to do better, be better.” To this, Oprah stated, “This goes beyond space. It’s an everlasting experience of growth and courage.”

For those unaware, according to the New York Post, Gayle King was accompanied by five other women pioneering in their respective fields on her rocket journey into space on Blue Origin’s first all-female tourism flight. King, 70, was joined by pop star Katy Perry, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, Jeff Bezos’s fiance Lauren Sanchez, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and producer Kerianne Flynn. The rocket journey was an 11-minute suborbital trip on the New Shepard spacecraft, which took off from West Texas. For the same, the ladies were all dressed up in coordinated blue suits and looked gorgeous.
