Rajkumar Hirani revised the PK script after noticing similarities with Inception.

PK released in 2014.

Rajkumar Hirani is one of Bollywood’s top directors. After his hits like Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots, he was set to make PK with Aamir Khan as an alien. In a recent interview, Hirani said he had to change the script because it was too similar to Inception.

He explained that when they started writing PK, Inception was released, and he noticed the similarities. To avoid accusations of copying, he decided to revise the film. He said in a chat with Galatta Plus, “When we started writing PK, Inception came and we realised our film was like Inception. PK had the power of getting into people’s minds and changing what they had experienced in their life. Because we felt, you become cynical about certain things if you have experienced life in a particular way. So if your experience can change, your cynicism will not be there, you become a different person. So we had gone on that path. So we realised if you do this, it will look like we have copied Inception.”

Hirani said that after spotting similarities with Inception, they tried a new story where PK ends up in a courtroom. “We started writing something else. Then OMG – Oh My God came, which is also… We had waked that path also, of him going to the courtroom. So the second half kept on changing,” he said.

In a the first episode of film trade analyst Komal Nahta’s podcast, too, Game Changers, Rajkumar Hirani had said, “We remember writing PK and we were very happy that we had written a unique idea that was nowhere else,” Hirani recalled. However, the excitement turned to concern when someone pointed out a striking similarity to another film. “Someone told us that this film has been written by someone else, and when we went and saw it, we were shocked. If we made this, people would say it’s copied, so we were worried,” he shared.
