Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon died at 54 after collapsing during football in Mawlai Mawiong.

Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon died at 54 of cardiac arrest on Thursday after collapsing while playing football with friends in Mawlai Mawiong. He was a leader of Voice of the People Party (VPP).

The MP was taking part in a friendly match when he suddenly fell on the field. He was first taken to the Mawiong Community Health Centre. As no doctor was available there, he was immediately referred to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw for advanced treatment, as per media reports.

Doctors tried to revive him, but he could not be saved.

Soon after the incident, political leaders, including Meghalaya Deputy Chief Prestone Tynsong, VPP chief Ardent M. Basaiawmoit, also reached the hospital.

The sudden death of the sitting MP has shocked people across Meghalaya. Leaders and supporters expressed grief over his unexpected passing.

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma Expresses Grief

Following his demise Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared condolences on X and wrote, “Deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the untimely demise of Hon’ble MP from Shillong, Dr. Ricky A. J. Syngkon. Dr. Ricky was a dedicated and compassionate leader, with deep enthusiasm for public service and unwavering commitment to his people. He was rooted in faith and served with humility, vision, and a sincere desire to uplift society.”

“My heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family, friends, and countless well-wishers during this difficult time. May he rest in peace,” he added.
