Shah hails Bodo peace accord, says 82 per cent clauses fulfilled

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the Congress made fun when the BJP-led government signed the Bodo accord, but it brought peace and development in the region. Addressing the 57th annual conference of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) in Assam’s Kokrajhar, Shah said the Centre gave R1,500 crore for the development of Bodoland, which has a population of 35 lakh. He said 82 per cent of clauses of the Bodo accord has been implemented and the remaining will be done in the next two years. Amit Shah also exhorted the Bodo youths to start preparing for the 2036 Olympics, which is proposed to be held in Ahmedabad. Bodo youths now carry the tricolour in their hands instead of guns and this has been possible due to the signing of the peace accord in January 2020, Shah said. “This has been possible due to the role of the ABSU, a signatory of the accord, in bringing peace to the region,” he said. “The Congress may have laughed at us that there will be …

Months after assembly polls, J&K issues orders officials to ‘accord priority’ to elected representatives | India News

Months after assembly polls, J&K issues orders officials to ‘accord priority’ to elected representatives | India News

The Jammu and Kashmir government Friday issued an order instructing all officials of the administration to extend cooperation and accord “priority” to elected representatives of the union territory. Highlighting the crucial role of elected representatives in governance in a directive issued Friday Commissioner/Secretary General Administration Department (GAD), B S Raju wrote: “It therefore becomes imperative that all government departments, officers and officials extend due cooperation and accord priority to issues highlighted/flagged by these public representatives”. In the backdrop of J&K’s elected government working in a UT set up for the first time and the bureaucracy caught between the Raj Bhawan and the chief minister, newly-elected MLAs have raised concerns of a “loss of connect” between the bureaucracy and the people. J&K was a state before but became a UT in 2019. Until last October, when a new government was elected following Assembly polls, its administration was run entirely through the Raj Bhawan, with only District Development Councils (DDC) still having elected representatives. Himanta raising Assam Accord to divert attention from family graft: Congress

Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia | Photo Credit: The Hindu Opposition Congress on Wednesday (September 18, 2024) slammed the BJP-led Assam government, claiming that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised the issue of Assam Accord implementation to divert public attention from alleged corruption by his family. Addressing a joint press conference, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah said the state government’s assertion to implement 57 recommendations of the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee on Assam Accord has no basis as only the Centre can execute the same. “CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wants to confuse people of Assam to sail through the 2026 assembly polls. Corruption by his family is a big issue in people’s minds. He has raised the Assam Accord topic just to divert public attention from his family,” Mr. Borah said. He said the recommendations of the committee to execute all the clauses of the Assam Accord can be implemented by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and it does not …

Google, Meta, OpenAI and More Firms Sign Tech Accord to Fight AI Election Interference Globally

A group of 20 tech companies announced on Friday they have agreed to work together to prevent deceptive artificial-intelligence content from interfering with elections across the globe this year. The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which can create text, images and video in seconds in response to prompts, has heightened fears that the new technology could be used to sway major elections this year, as more than half of the world’s population is set to head to the polls. Signatories of the tech accord, which was announced at the Munich Security Conference, include companies that are building generative AI models used to create content, including OpenAI, Microsoft and Adobe. Other signatories include social media platforms that will face the challenge of keeping harmful content off their sites, such as Meta Platforms, TikTok and X, formerly known as Twitter. The agreement includes commitments to collaborate on developing tools for detecting misleading AI-generated images, video and audio, creating public awareness campaigns to educate voters on deceptive content and taking action on such content on their …

ULFA pact: an accord of safeguards?

United Liberation Front of Asom chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa arrives at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on December 31, 2023 after the signing of a peace accord between ULFA and the central and Assam governments in New Delhi. | Photo Credit: PTI Can a peace pact with a faction of an extremist organisation do what six years of agitation to drive out ‘Bangladeshis’ and a follow-up exercise to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) could not? Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma believes it can while conveying a narrowing gap between the Assamese and Bengali communities through a formula to determine who qualifies to be labelled indigenous. On December 29, 2023, the pro-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) signed a tripartite peace deal with the Centre and the Assam government. Unlike similar pacts with other Assam-based outfits, the formal agreement with the ULFA faction did not signal the end of extremism in Assam. This is because the hardline ULFA (Independent) faction headed by Paresh Baruah continues to wage war …

The Accord will be Honda’s first car to offer Google built-in

Honda’s next Accord will be the automaker’s first vehicle to support Google built-in integration, enabling native Android apps and over the air (OTA) software updates (via Automotive News). It will be included as a standard feature in the top Touring trim of the 2023 Accord, arriving early next year. If you’ve never heard of “Google built-in,” that’s because it’s just another name for Android Automotive — the software giant’s vehicle operating system. Considering Google also has a similarly-named phone-to-car integration system called Android Auto (like Apple’s CarPlay), it makes sense that the less confusing “Google built-in” seems to be the company’s preferred name going forward. Honda hasn’t revealed if its other vehicles will be getting Google built-in yet. The automaker had previously used custom (and now outdated) embedded Android software in some of its cars, but now it’s fully leveraging Google’s offerings to tackle all the hard infotainment stuff. Navigation in the Accord will be taken care of with using Google Maps, voice controls can change things like passenger air temperatures, and music apps will …
