Google Abusing Dominant Position in Ad Tech Sector, Says U.K. Government

The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority has provisionally ruled that Google’s dominance in the ad tech market is detrimental to competitors — and could fine the tech giant up to 10% of its global annual turnover as a result. Since at least 2015, the company has allegedly been operating its tools for ad space buyers and sellers, such as Google Ads, in a way that protects its ad space auction platform, AdX, from competition. The CMA also says Google is preventing rival ad space listing tools from competing with its own, DoubleClick For Publishers. Such anticompetitive practices “could be harming thousands of UK publishers and advertisers.” According to the authority, advertisers spend about £1.8 billion annually on open-display ads, marketing goods, and services via apps and websites to U.K. consumers. “We’ve provisionally found that Google is using its market power to hinder competition when it comes to the ads people see on websites,” said Juliette Enser, interim executive director of Enforcement, in a press release. “Many businesses are able to keep their digital content free …

Disney Using New AI-Backed Advertising Tool For Disney+, Hulu Ads

Walt Disney is harnessing artificial intelligence to power a new advertising tool that will help brands tailor their commercials to fit the mood of specific scenes within a movie or television series. Dubbed “Disney’s Magic Words,” this tool introduces a new form of contextual advertising for the Disney+ and Hulu streaming services. It uses a combination of AI and machine learning to analyse and tag scenes across its library, identifying the contents, brands, images and mood. Brands can use these descriptive tags, known as metadata, to identify a specific scene or mood and then personalise messaging to match. “What that means is leaving broad demos (demographics) behind and buying specific audiences,” said Geoffrey Calabrese, Omnicom Media Group’s chief investment officer. “These magic words are literally going to be able to connect me to the emotions of the consumer, at an audience level. And for us, that’s really a game changer.” Omnicom is one of six global advertising companies taking part in an early beta test of this advertising product, Disney told Reuters. The other beta …

Twitter to Expand Types of Political Ads Permitted on Platform After 2019 Global Ban

Twitter on Tuesday said it would expand the types of political ads allowed on the social media platform, an apparent reversal of its 2019 global ban on political ads, as the Elon Musk-owned company seeks to grow revenue. The company tweeted it would also relax its advertising policy for “cause-based ads” in the United States, and moving forward would align its advertising policy “with that of TV and other media outlets.” We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics. Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks. — Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) January 3, 2023 Twitter banned political ads in 2019 after it and other social media companies like Facebook faced widespread criticism for allowing election misinformation to spread across its services. It also restricted ads related to social causes. “We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought,” tweeted Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s then-chief executive, in announcing the move. Since Musk took over Twitter …

Tesla Hit With KRW 2.85 Billion Fine in South Korea Over Alleged False Advertising

South Korea’s antitrust regulator said it would impose a KRW 2.85 billion (roughly Rs. 18 crore) fine on Tesla for failing to tell its customers about the shorter driving range of its electric vehicles (EVs) in low temperatures. The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said that Tesla had exaggerated the “driving ranges of its cars on a single charge, their fuel cost-effectiveness compared to gasoline vehicles as well as the performance of its Superchargers” on its official local website since August 2019 until recently. The driving range of the US EV manufacturer’s cars plunge in cold weather by up to 50.5 percent versus how they are advertised online, the KFTC said in a statement on Tuesday. Tesla could not be immediately reached for comment. On its website, Tesla provides winter driving tips, such as pre-conditioning vehicles with external power sources, and using its updated Energy app to monitor energy consumption, but does not mention the loss of driving range in sub-zero temperatures. In 2021, Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, a South Korean consumer group, said …
