Planning a trip? Here’s how to avoid fuel surcharges and higher airfares

Fuel prices are “not very high, relatively speaking,” says U.S. President Donald Trump. However, Trump’s remark is far from reality. The ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran has pushed up global oil prices and affected airline operations, leading to higher airfares and increased travel costs for many people. Rising fuel prices and airline surcharges are making travel more expensive. (Pexel/Representative image) (Pexel) Higher oil prices have made jet fuel more expensive, forcing some airlines to increase ticket costs and reduce flight schedules. The travel industry is facing these problems during the busy summer season, when millions of people are expected to travel. A survey by Global Rescue found that 85% of Americans are worried that global conflicts could delay or disrupt their travel plans. The concerns come as the U.S. prepares for major summer events, including FIFA World Cup matches in 11 cities and America250 celebrations. Aviation consultant Robert Mann said to Kiplinger, there are many factors affecting travel this summer, calling the situation complex. Airfares are rising Domestic flight prices are about 18% …

Supreme Court seeks rationalisation of airfares, asks Centre to ease burden on flyers

Supreme Court seeks rationalisation of airfares, asks Centre to ease burden on flyers

The Supreme Court on Friday said there should be some rationalisation of airfares and asked the Centre to provide relief to flyers. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta flagged that on the same day, one airline flying in the same sector charges a particular airfare while other charges a different airfare. “Try to give some relief to the people because of the discrepancy. On the same day, flights to the same sector, one airline charges Rs 8000 while the other airline charges Rs 18000 for the economy class,” the bench told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre. Govt caps ATF hike to prevent surge in domestic airfares, shields flyers

Govt caps ATF hike to prevent surge in domestic airfares, shields flyers

The government on Wednesday said that domestic airfares are unlikely to see a sharp rise as it has cushioned the impact of a steep surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices by allowing only a partial increase for domestic airlines.  According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), ATF prices in India deregulated since 2001 are revised monthly based on international benchmarks. Given the current geopolitical situation, ATF prices for domestic markets were expected to rise by more than 100 per cent from April 1. However, in a bid to shield domestic air travel costs from a steep spike, public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs), in consultation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, have implemented only a partial and staggered increase. Domestic airlines will face a limited hike of around 25 per cent, translating to approximately Rs 15 per litre, instead of the full pass-through of global price increases, the government said. In contrast, airlines operating on international routes will bear the full increase in ATF prices, in line with global market-linked pricing. …

Image for representational purposes only. | Photo Credit: Reuters The Centre has withdrawn air fare caps that were introduced in December to curb spike in ticket prices after IndiGo’s widespread flight cancellations. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said in an order dated March 21, “The prevailing situation has since stabilised, with restoration of capacity and normalisation of operations across the sector, upon review, it has been decided that the fare cap imposed vide the aforesaid letter shall stand withdrawn with effect from 23rd March, 2026.” The decision comes at a time airlines are hit hard by the conflict in West Asia leading to increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices as well as flight cancellations and re-routings that burn more fuel and are costlier. The Ministry, however, said that airlines must ensure pricing discipline. “Airlines shall ensure that fares remain reasonable, transparent and commensurate with market conditions, and that passenger interests are not adversely impacted.” It also warned of regulatory action, including reintroduction of fare caps if there was an unjustified surge in fares. War-risk cover for flights may push up fares| India News

New Delhi: Insurance companies are moving to raise war-risk premiums for airline fleets operating to West Asia, which could push up already-elevated airfares as carriers are likely to pass on part of the additional cost to passengers, multiple aviation industry insiders told HT. Passengers stranded due to flight disruptions and cancellations following the situation in West Asia at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport, in New Delhi earlier this week. (ANI Photo) (Sathiya) People familiar with the discussions said insurers have begun reaching out to airlines operating flights to parts of West Asia, citing higher operational risks to “war zone” areas and seeking to revise premiums for aircraft flying these routes. Carriers have started operating a limited number of flights to ferry stranded passengers to and from Gulf airports in the wake of the escalating conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. Queries sent to Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air did not get a response. “In situations like this, the underwriter has the right to issue a notice of …

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu speaking in the Lok Sabha. Addressing the Lok Sabha on a resolution calling for appropriate measures to regulate airfare in the country, Naidu said a deregulated market has helped passengers. “The idea behind deregulation, when it was introduced, was to allow the sector to grow. All countries that have seen exceptional growth had deregulated markets. Deregulation opens up the market for more players to come in and it encourages competition. Govt caps airfares at Rs 7,500-Rs 18,000 across India amid IndiGo crisis

The Ministry of Civil Aviation on Saturday imposed a country-wide cap on domestic airfares in order to contain the sharp and sudden surge in ticket prices following massive disruptions at IndiGo, which led to widespread cancellations and reduced capacity across several routes.  As per the ministry`s order, airlines have been prohibited from charging above the newly fixed maximum limits, which have been introduced in public interest, until flight operations return to normal. The cap ranges from Rs 7,500 to Rs 18,000 depending on the length of the route. For flights of up to 500 km, the maximum permissible fare is Rs 7,500. The cap for sectors between 500 and 1,000 km is Rs 12,000. Routes between 1,000 and 1,500 km have a ceiling of Rs 15,000, while fares on flights covering over 1,500 km cannot exceed Rs 18,000. Domestic airfares capped to prevent demand-supply price spike: Air India

Air India and Air India Express have clarified that they have capped economy class fares on all non-stop domestic flights since December 4, 2025. The move was taken to prevent fare hikes that usually occur through revenue management systems when demand increases suddenly, an official statement said.  The airlines said they were aware of screenshots circulating online that showed very high last-minute fares for journeys involving one-stop or two-stop routes, or combinations of economy, premium economy and business class. They explained that it is not technically possible to cap every such route or mixed-class itinerary, especially those displayed on third-party booking platforms. However, the airlines confirmed they are engaging with these platforms to ensure better monitoring and oversight. A spokesperson said that both Air India and Air India Express are working to add more capacity so that the travellers and their baggage can reach their destinations as quickly as possible. “Air India & Air India Express clarify that, since 4 December, economy class airfares on non-stop domestic flights have been proactively capped to prevent the …
