The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) carried out a major demolition drive in Akurdi on Wednesday, removing nearly 12,000 square feet of unauthorised structures near Hotel Majestic as part of its ongoing action against illegal constructions across the city. The operation was conducted under the direct instructions of PCMC Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi and targeted unauthorised RCC structures and tin-sheet sheds built on Survey No. 7/1/1B in Ward No. 15, which falls under the jurisdiction of the civic body`s ‘A’ Ward Office. According to civic officials, the action forms part of the municipal corporation’s broader efforts to enforce building regulations, prevent illegal construction activities and ensure planned urban development. Planned development Speaking about the demolition drive, PCMC Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi said unauthorised constructions pose a serious threat to the city`s planned and sustainable growth. He said structures built without the approval of the municipal corporation violate building regulations and cannot be allowed to remain. A massive demolition drive was launched in Gujarat`s Ahmedabad, officials said on Monday, adding that around 4,000 sq metres of land was cleared for highway project, reported the IANS. The large-scale demolition and encroachment removal drive in Viramgam town of Gujarat`s Ahmedabad district as part of the Viramgam-Surendranagar-Wadhwan four-lane road project, they said. The operation covered nearly 4,000 square metres of government and private land along a 400-metre stretch near Gangasar Lake. Officials said the area had become a major traffic bottleneck, affecting connectivity at the entrance to Viramgam town. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Virendra Desai said the action was taken after completing all legal formalities and land acquisition procedures, as per the PTI. According to officials, the land was privately owned and had been acquired under the prescribed land acquisition process, with compensation provided to eligible landowners before possession was taken. Desai said the stretch included three dargahs and several other encroachments that had obstructed the planned road widening work. A bench of justice Prateek Jalan, holding that the bail grant was “cryptic” and “unreasoned” in his order delivered on Thursday, directed the trial court to hear the bail plea on Friday. However, it could not be taken up as the roster judge was on leave. New Delhi: Public safety is paramount and any religious structure encroaching upon a road, water bodies, or rail tracks must go, the Supreme Court said today. The court stressed that India is a secular country and its directions for bulldozer action and anti-encroachment drives will be for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan was hearing petitions challenging bulldozer action against people accused of crimes. The trend, which has caught on in several states, is often referred to as ‘bulldozer justice’. The state authorities have, in the past, maintained that only illegal structures were demolished in such cases. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for three states — Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Protesting residents pelted employees of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and police personnel accompanying them with stones when a team of officials started pulling down three commercial buildings as part of a demolition drive in the city’s Akbar Nagar area. Two government vehicles were damaged in the stone-pelting “mild force” was used to bring the situation under control, police said. The situation escalated when rumours spread that some persons were killed after being trapped under the debris during the demolition of one of the buildings. A large number of people gathered there and started pelting stones at the LDA team and police. The matter was resolved only when additional police teams arrived and pacified the protesters. Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa said 600 personnel of the State police and the CRPF have been deployed for the exercise and a mock drill was conducted by the forces on Sunday. “We are prepared to conduct the drive in a smooth and peaceful manner,” he added. Out of 2,560.25 hectares of Pava Reserve Forest, only 29 hectares are currently free of any encroachment. In the first phase on January, 10,500 hectares in Adhasona and Mohaghuli villages will be cleared, the officials said. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation has been carrying out eviction drives in different parts of the State since it assumed power in May 2021, with two such exercises undertaken last month.
