Hima Das gets clean chit from NADA’s Anti-Doping Appeal Panel

Star India sprinter Hima Das has been cleared by the NADA’s Anti-Doping Appeal Panel (ADAP) which exonerated her from doping charges arising out of three whereabouts failures in 12 months. 24-year-old Hima was suspended provisionally last year by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for three consecutive whereabouts failures in 12 months. She returned to action in 200m at the Indian Grand Prix 1 in Bengaluru on April 30 but failed to finish the event. She was also present at the Inter-State Athletics Championships before the Olympics. In a September 4 decision, the Anti-Doping Appeal Panel upheld the Disciplinary Panel’s ruling to clear her of doping charges. “The ADDP order is upheld. Athlete exonerated from doping charges” stated the latest update on ADAP decisions on the NADA website. No further details were available regarding who appealed the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel’s decision, but NADA likely initiated the appeal as the body has previously appealed in such cases when decisions favoured athletes. The runner from Assam was not named in the Hangzhou Asian Games team last year due …

File photo of Vinesh Phogat© AFP The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Wednesday served a notice to wrestler Vinesh Phogat for whereabouts failure and sought an explanation within 14 days. All the athletes registered with NADA’s Registered Testing Pool (RTP), of which Vinesh is a part, are required to provide details about their availability for dope tests. If they fill the details and are found not available on that location at that given time, it is considered a whereabouts failure. The NADA, in its notice, conveyed to the wrestler-turned-politician that she had apparently committed a whereabouts failure as she was not available for a dope test on September 9 at her house in Kharkhoda village in Sonepat. Vinesh had announced her retirement from the sport after her Paris Olympics campaign ended in heartbreak, where she made the final but was disqualified ahead of her gold-medal bout for being overweight. Vinesh and fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia joined the Congress party recently and she is contesting the upcoming Haryana Assembly election from Julana constituency. She …

India could lose a Paris Olympics quota as one boxer accused of anti-doping rule violation | Sport-others News

India is fighting to save one of the four Paris Olympics berths it has earned in boxing after it emerged that a World Championship and Asian Games medallist has been accused of an anti-doping rule violation. The International Test Agency (ITA), which is overseeing the anti-doping programme for boxing at the Olympics, alleged the said boxer did not file her whereabouts details as per the World Anti-Doping Agency rules. The alleged rule violation took place last year before the Asian Games. According to WADA rules, athletes have to disclose their home address, training information and location, competition schedule and regular personal activities to an anti-doping agency, which can conduct surprise visits and tests out of competition. Failure to do so, or even submitting incomplete details, could lead to a suspension of up to two years. The boxer in question is one of India’s leading names and has recorded podium finishes at the World Championship and Asian Championship apart from last year’s Asian Games, where the Olympic quota was won. However, if the ITA decides to …

How India topped WADA’s anti-doping report

On April 9, in an unprecedented incident, the Meeting de Limoges, a challenger-level athletics meet in France, cancelled the entries of three Indian athletes, sparking a controversy. The organiser of the French event raised doubt about the cleanliness of Indian athletes; they pointed to India’s dubious record in tackling the menace of doping. India topped the World Athletics’ doping report for 2022 and has been a consistent dope offender. Though Meeting de Limoges later accepted the Indian athletes’ participation after much deliberations with the World Athletics intervening, their initial refusal to let Indians compete signalled a larger problem – the doping abuse and perception that the Indian sporting ecosystem has built before the world. The trigger was the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Adverse Analytical Findings, where India achieved a disgraceful first, making a two-place rise from the 2021 report, to become the world’s biggest dope offenders, with 127 Indian athletes (3.26 percent of the sample size) testing positive. India have the highest percentage of doping violations among countries that conducted 2,000 or more tests. India’s Olympic …

India tested 3865 samples (urine, and blood combined) during the recorded period, of which 125 returned adverse analytical findings. This amounts to 3.2 per cent of the samples, the WADA said in its report released late on Wednesday. In terms of number of samples tested, India was 11th on the list but the number of doping violations were higher than major sporting nations like Russia (85), USA (84), Italy (73) and France (72). South Africa returned the next highest percentage of adverse findings — 2.9 per cent from 2033 tested samples. The third place was taken by Kazakhstan with 1.9 per cent of its testing pool of 2174 samples returning adverse findings. The fourth highest percentage came from Norway and the USA. While the USA tested 6782 samples, Norway’s count was 2075. China tested the highest number of samples — 19,228 …

Brazil’s Gabigol Handed Two-Year Ban For Anti-Doping ‘Fraud’

Flamengo’s international forward Gabriel Barbosa was suspended for two years on Monday for attempted fraud during a doping test, a Brazilian sports court said. Known as Gabigol, the 27-year-old Brazilian was alleged to have been uncooperative during a surprise doping test at club headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. The punishment, which can be appealed, is backdated to April 8 last year, when the events occurred. He failed to comply with the schedule, disrespected the doping officers and refused to obey instructions, local media said. “The aforementioned athlete was tried today by the Full Court of Sports Anti-Doping and, by majority, it was decided that a violation of the anti-doping rule of fraud had occurred,” the court said in a statement sent to AFP. Gabigol subsequently hit back on social media, saying “I never tried to obstruct or defraud any test.” “I am confident I will be found innocent at the highest court,” he added.
