Southern districts, once known as a laggard, seek to shed the bad image

Southern districts, once known as a laggard, seek to shed the bad image

As Tamil Nadu prepares for an electoral battle, its southern districts, once known as a laggard in the development process, are trying to shed the image stuck to them. Though it is too early to arrive at any conclusion about the lasting beneficial impact of the process, the region is getting much more attention in recent years than in the past. In the last eight months, two important developments took place in Thoothukudi district itself: the establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant by VinFast and the commissioning of the first 660-MW supercritical thermal power plant established by Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation. Berthing bigger ships The Thoothukudi port, named after leading freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, has initiated the tendering process for the outer harbour project, the implementation of which will enable bigger vessels to get berthed at the port and help reduce the dependence on the Colombo harbour for trans-shipment. In fact, Ramanathapuram, considered a condemned district in the past for the posting of government officials, is one of the top 10 districts …

Tamil Nadu missed out on Central government schemes because DMK saw BJP as an enemy, says G.K. Vasan

Chennai Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan in an interview with The Hindu said people of Tamil Nadu are angry as the state missed several schemes due to the DMK government treating the ruling BJP as an “enemy”. Expressing confidence that the AIADMK-led NDA, of which his party is a constituent, is the “winning front” in the upcoming Assembly elections, he said the DMK and actor C Joseph Vijay’s TVK could fight for the “second position”. Edited excerpts In 2016, you refused to join the AIADMK alliance because its leader Jayalalithaa asked TMC (M) candidates to contest on the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol. But in 2021, you contested on ‘Two Leaves’. Now, what prompted you field your party’s five candidates on the BJP’s ‘Lotus’ symbol? TMC (M) was revived in 2014, and 2016 was our first Assembly election. We joined the third front [People’s Welfare Front]. We wanted to contest on Moopanar’s ‘Cycle’ symbol. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the ‘Cycle’ symbol in 2016 because there was an Election Commission case from the Panthers Party of Kashmir. …

A true benevolent authoritarian enforces discipline for the greater good: Seeman

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman, in an interview with The Hindu in Chennai on Friday, shares his thoughts on his party’s Assembly election manifesto, his leadership style, and other aspects. Edited excerpts: Your party’s manifesto talks about reorganising the economy around agriculture. Are you talking about shutting down industries and factories over time or seeking balance between industrial growth and agricultural growth? I am not saying we should shut it down. But there are toxic industries that poison the land, water, and air. Those cannot be allowed to operate. If we want to provide jobs for everyone and build a stable economy, we must move towards an agriculture-centred economy. We must achieve self-sufficiency in food production. Today, many countries have collapsed because they abandoned agriculture. Meanwhile, even essential food items such as onions are imported from countries like Egypt. What pride is there in exporting cars? I am not saying shut the factories. Let them exist. But I will also create government-led industries based on local resources. These will create jobs without huge …
