The mystery of athletes disappearing after the Commonwealth Games

The mystery of athletes disappearing after the Commonwealth Games

When the closing ceremony ends at a major multi-sport event, national contingents are expected to return home. But every few years, a handful of athletes choose not to board those flights. Instead, they disappear from the Games Village, abandon their teams without informing officials and, in many cases, apply for asylum or overstay their visas in the host country. Following the conclusion of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Police Scotland confirmed inquiries into athletes who failed to return with their national delegations, with the UK’s Home Office also involved. Reports identified four Ugandan boxers, Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis and Emily Nakalema, along with Pakistani boxer Qudratullah as unaccounted for. One of the Ugandan athletes reportedly told the media that they intended to remain in the United Kingdom and seek asylum, citing better training facilities, career opportunities and living conditions. Authorities have not yet announced the outcome of those investigations, but the episode is far from unprecedented. A pattern spanning decades Athletes disappearing after a major international competition is not a new phenomenon. While there …

Indian athletes who underperformed in Glasgow

Indian athletes who underperformed in Glasgow

India concluded its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign in fourth place, securing a total of 39 medals from the 11-day sporting festival in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite featuring only 10 sports, six of which included para events, India performed well in the competition, largely thanks to its boxing, judo, and para athletics contingents. Although several athletes delivered surprise medals, particularly in athletics and judo, several others were unable to match the high expectations placed on them. Here are a few athletes who failed to impress or underperformed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games: Gurindervir Singh – Athletics Indian national record holder Gurindervir Singh carried high expectations from fans heading into the Commonwealth Games, but he failed to deliver. After recently clocking a national record of 10.09s at the Senior National Federation Cup, many expected him to at least reach the semi-finals in Glasgow. Instead, he produced a disappointing performance, managing only 10.39s in the preliminary round to finish 28th, with just 17 spots available. This ranking looked much worse when we take into account that the top seven …

The greatest chapter yet: Indian para athletes rewrite India’s Commonwealth Games legacy

The greatest chapter yet: Indian para athletes rewrite India’s Commonwealth Games legacy

This was always going to be a difficult Commonwealth Games for India. Maintaining the 50-medal benchmark, a streak the nation had carried into every edition since the turn of the century, looked improbable in Glasgow because of the significantly reduced sports programme. Sharmila Dhankar, left, and Shilpa K Shyla celebrate after winning gold and bronze medals respectively in the women’s shot put F57 at the 23rd Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow (PTI) The weightlifters ignited India’s campaign with a flurry of medals and Games records. The boxers then stole the spotlight, delivering the greatest boxing campaign by any contingent in Commonwealth Games history with seven golds and three silvers. Yet, the story of India’s Glasgow campaign cannot be told without its para athletes. They did far more than win medals. They shattered ceilings, eclipsed every benchmark set before them and transformed what was once considered an inspiring side story into one of the defining narratives of India’s sporting rise. Two decades of India pulling its own athletes off the plane for doping

Two decades of India pulling its own athletes off the plane for doping

Three names were struck off India’s 2026 Commonwealth Games contingent in the final days before the Glasgow opening ceremony. Judoka Arun Kumar, gone for an anabolic steroid found in an out-of-competition sample. Weightlifter Dilbag Singh, gone for a sin that wasn’t his – sacrificed because his federation had fielded more athletes than its doping-depleted quota allowed. Judoka Tulika Maan, gone not for a failed test but because she couldn’t be located for one too many times. Three athletes, three mechanisms, one old story. This is not a fresh scandal. India has had this exact conversation, only the names and paperwork changing, for at least 22 years across every major multi-sport event it sends a team to. What should alarm the sports establishment isn’t that it happened again, but how precisely it rhymes. A two-decade pattern At the 2004 Athens Olympics, weightlifters Pratima Kumari and Sanamacha Chanu were both caught in the dope net. While Kumari was expelled from Olympic village after a testosterone finding before her competition, Chanu was caught for the masking diuretic furosemide …
